Overview:
The Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) is responsible for designing solutions to provide worldclass technology capabilities so that Novant Health can deliver the most remarkable patient experience, in every dimension, every time. Novant Health strives to be a national leader in the clinical informatics space. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the CHIO is a physician executive leader who has responsibility for all clinical informatics teams at Novant Health. The CHIO is a board-certified physician leader who will continue to actively practice medicine in their respective specialty. The CHIO is accountable for setting the strategy for clinical informatics across the enterprise. This position encompasses all clinical informatics regardless of domain space or scope. At Novant Health this includes clinical informatics for a large medical group, all acute facilities, ambulatory surgery centers, digital health tools, nursing informatics, clinical performance analytics, and clinical innovation. This position is designed seamlessly to integrate new facilities and providers under the CHIO umbrella as the organization grows.

The CHIO is responsible for developing and maintaining a strategy for:

  • Effective use of our Dimensions tool (EPIC) with appropriate optimization and governance of enhancements through the Dimensions Leadership Triads (DLTs).
  • Clinical technology demand and prioritization management.
  • Governance structure for all acute, ambulatory, and digital heath technology needs.
  • Design of optimal clinical workflows to enhance clinical efficiency and provider wellness.
  • Implementation of clinical technology that results in successful user adoption.
  • Clinical quality performance data analytics and visualization.

The CHIO will partner closely with all clinical leaders including the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chief Safety and Quality Officer (CQO), Market Chief Clinical Officers (CCOs), Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs) and Institute leaders to design technological solutions to promote remarkable patient care, optimize safety and quality, and enhance clinician wellness.
Additionally, the CHIO is responsible for the successful adoption of clinical technology integration as part of current and future mergers and acquisitions. The CHIO will create a strategy for the Wellness Informatics team that will track and optimize workflows to enhance physician efficiency and proficiency with clinical technology, with the goal of promoting productivity and well-being. The CHIO will build and integrate a team of clinical informaticists who will provide on site support to all clinical users.
The CHIO is responsible for incorporating virtual and emerging technology into Novant Health’s overarching strategy, collaborating closely with the executive team, as well as the Digital Products and Services (DPS) senior leadership team to craft game-changing strategies for the delivery of remarkable care to every patient, in every dimension, every time. The CHIO will work closely with a variety of stakeholders across the system to deliver patient engagement strategies and digital health services.
The CHIO will also develop virtual offerings and defining how virtual offerings can be expanded beyond current limited scope into a full-service business. The CHIO will build close relationships with the executive team and their senior staff members to drive innovation and alignment across operational efforts throughout system. The CHIO will surface and operationalize technological innovations, particularly those related to digital consumer and patient engagement, advances in medicine and value-based care delivery.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Medical Doctor, required.
  • Experience: 3 Years experience must have a strong mix of healthcare experience and technology knowledge, understanding how to prioritize efforts to achieve the desired outcomes related to remarkable patient experiences.
  • Licensure/Certification: Physician with Board certification in Clinical Informatics and primary speciality. Must have/be able to obtain an unrestricted medical license in North Carolina.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Follows established Novant Health and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Provides the strategic context for clinical informatics, creating and maintaining a strong relationship between fellow executives and clinical users.
  • Helps lead clinical systems and data governance initiatives with senior DPS leaders.
  • Spearheads analytics-based initiatives by partnering with the DPS Steering Committee ensuring that clinicians’ needs and expectations are incorporated into the business initiatives.
  • Involved in executive level strategy discussions and assuming responsibility for acute care clinical systems strategic organizational initiatives.
  • Acts as a liaison between clinicians and DPS - communicates, interprets, and translates clinicians’ needs for DPS and in turn facilitates clinicians’ understanding of digital products and services and manages their expectations of new systems; incorporates clinical workflow planning and redesign into EHR design and optimization.
  • Reviews medical informatics trends, experiences, and approaches, develops technical and application implementation strategies and assists in the development of strategic plans for clinical information systems.
  • Works in concert with DPS to design and implement systems supporting patient care and research activities.
  • Leads design of clinical pathway models with physician, nursing, and administrative leadership, and will assist in modification of these models to gain maximum efficacy and support for patient care and research protocols.
  • Leads development of clinical “rules” supporting patient care and protocol research as well as the design of clinical system features supporting protocol management and the use of the system to leverage the clinicians’ time and maximize communication with affiliates and referring physicians.
  • Ensures clinical quality (regulatory reporting and metrics) and patient safety are coordinated with EHR workflows and operations.
