Job Title – Band 3 Systems Engineer
Pay Band – Up to £61k (negotiable depending on experience)
Location – Stratford with hybrid working*

Contract Type – TfL Engineering, Permanent

  • Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Ensures the safety, functionality, or compliance of low to medium risk newly implemented or altered assets, engineering processes, procedures, or systems.
  • Leads the development and implementation of low complexity engineering solutions within their stated discipline or functional specialism, through the application of defined engineering standards and governance.
  • Provides internal stakeholders with appropriate challenge and professional advice to ensure the development or delivery of high quality, tested engineering solutions.
  • Undertakes on-site risk-based monitoring and surveillance of works as required, resolving and or escalating risks and issues as appropriate.
  • Maintains working knowledge of applicable standards, design codes and legislation applicable to their discipline or functional specialism.
  • Evaluates, selects, and applies appropriate solutions to low risk/value/complexity engineering problems that improve efficiency or effectiveness, while improving safety and reducing operating costs.
  • Makes technical recommendations for own discipline or functional specialism to customers or senior management to inform technical decision making.
  • Supports continuous improvement using best practice, innovation, whole life cost optimisation and effective root cause analysis

SKILLS

  • Ability to understand complex systems and processes

  • Ability to transform requirements into specifications, architectures, and system breakdown

KNOWLEDGE

  • Incorporated Engineer, recognised international equivalent or possesses equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Basic understanding of the challenges of introducing new assets or changes in practice into the transport system and the necessary trade-off between cost, time and quality
  • Basic level knowledge of a relevant engineering discipline or functional specialism
  • Basic understanding of the interfaces between own discipline / functional specialism and the wider transport system
  • Basic understanding of the principles of risk management and value engineering
  • Basic knowledge of applicable health & safety legislation, industry best practice, standards, and guidance
  • Basic knowledge of the TfL Vision, Mayoral Transport Strategy, Business priorities and financial constraints
  • General understanding of systems engineering management
  • Good domain knowledge of the relevant transport and/ or infrastructure system
  • Awareness of requirements management techniques
  • Awareness of specification and visualisation of complex systems and processes
  • Awareness of systems engineering sub-disciplines: system architecting and modelling, interface management and requirements/configuration management
  • Knowledge of whole life cost analysis

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in several of the following areas: conception, specification, design, construction, testing, commissioning, bringing into use, operation and or disposal of assets, systems or changes to engineering practice
  • Experience of managing small multi-disciplinary engineering teams or applying engineering principles to resolve low complexity technical challenges
  • Experience of applying professional engineering judgement to support low risk / complexity projects or operational activities
  • Experience of building relationships with and influencing a wide range of stakeholder at all levels within and outside of the organisation
  • Working experience in at least 3 of the systems engineering sub-disciplines, e.g. system architecting and modelling, interface management and requirements/configuration management, etc.
  • Experience in planning and applying systems engineering activities
  • Experience in applying systems engineering methods and tools

Responsibilities:

As a Systems Engineer, you shall provide technical expertise and advice to support the development and delivery of Systems Engineering activity. This shall be achieved by establishing and systematically documenting the associated definition of customer/user needs and requirements early in the development cycle, followed by design synthesis, change and configuration control, systems integration, verification and validation to enable the successful and safe refurbishment, renewal, improvement and/or extension, etc., of TfL assets. A systematic approach shall be deployed in considering the complete problem and the required outcome, including cost and schedule, performance, testing, manufacturing, training, operations, and disposal.

To be considered for the role, you will ideally have experience on:

  • Systems engineering design, integration, verification and validation, requirements management and configuration and change management.
  • Determining, planning and delivery of engineering for innovative and complex systems, products and services.
  • Creating assurance submissions.
  • Supporting the achievement of system acceptance and handover.
  • Specifying and procuring complex systems.
  • Working independently with limited guidance and quickly understand complex issues and tasks.
  • Working in a ‘matrix’ organisation.
  • Working to tight deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
