The Department of Taxes’ Compliance Division seeks a talented individual who wants to support public programs through the accurate and equitable collection of Vermont taxes. This position will be involved with the review of taxpayer records for compliance and with providing educational assistance and outreach to taxpayers.

Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for co-planning, designing and implementing the Division’s corporate audit program ensuring that all policies, procedures and training materials needed for the Division’s increased scrutiny of complex corporate tax issues are implemented in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining an internal control program, including policy and procedures to insure the efficiency and effectiveness of the newly implemented programs, and to provide assurance of legal and regulatory compliance
  • Involved in the training of Audit Team members; to insure they have the appropriate skill sets to conduct remote corporate audits of some of the State’s larger and more sophisticated business operations
  • Responsible for conducting corporate tax audits

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be inquisitive, collaborative, digitally proficient and self-motivated
  • Be required to be thoroughly familiar with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as promulgated by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
  • Have a desire to learn new skills and software used for tax administration
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds.
  • A desire to continue to learn and grow.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or an equally pertinent field AND five (5) years or more professional accounting or auditing experience.
OR
Accreditation as a CPA or Certified Internal Auditor

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Accounting or auditing experience in the public or governmental sectors.
Three (3) years or more in a supervisory or training capacity.
