POSITION OVERVIEW:

Southpointe is seeking a dedicated Teacher Assistant - Medical Attendant to provide essential support for students with medical needs in an educational setting. This role involves assisting teachers in daily classroom activities while also addressing the health and personal care requirements of students. The ideal candidate will foster a safe and supportive environment, ensuring that all students can participate fully in their learning while receiving the necessary medical attention.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Successful completion of a secondary school graduation program or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated ability to follow a rigorous support plan;
  • Level 2 First Aid Training or ability and willingness to be certified as OFA Level 2 (Southpointe will pay for training);
  • Proven ability to implement behavior management techniques as well as flexibility in response to student behaviors (e.g. adjusting and adapting strategies);
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively while following the direction and guidance of classroom/resource teacher(s)/administrators;
  • Ability to operate a variety of office and school equipment, including equipment specific to the needs of the student(s);
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Ability to use judgment when providing information;
  • Physically capable of performing the duties of the position;
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of a recognized post-secondary Educational Assistant program;
  • 1 year of recent experience related to meeting the needs of student(s);
  • Experience in following a Diabetes Support plan;
  • Experience administering insulin.
  • Experience with first aid.

Responsibilities:

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be the delegated person responsible for blood glucose monitoring and insulin administration throughout the school day as directed by the Nursing Support Service;
  • Follow the Diabetes Support Plan as provided by the Nursing Support Service;
  • Monitor for signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and treat as appropriate;
  • Receive training from the Nursing Support Service and administer medication as appropriate;
  • Administer First Aid to students, faculty and staff as required as an Occupational First Aid Level 2 Attendant.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide individualized attention and support to students during class activities;
  • Monitor and supervise students during class time and outdoor playing times, both on and off campus, to ensure student safety and well-being;
  • Assist with student transitions, such as arrival, dismissal, and lunchtime, ensuring a smooth and orderly process;
  • Assist in recording student performance and behavior observations for the lead teacher’s review and evaluation;
  • Work closely with students who may require extra attention or assistance, including those with learning or behavioral challenges;
  • Collaborate with other staff members, including the administrative team;
  • Assist in promoting a positive and respectful learning environment;
  • Support the lead teachers in managing classroom behavior and implementing classroom expectations;
  • Supervise students in classrooms while the lead teachers work with small groups of students in nearby learning spaces;
  • Communicate positively with all members of the school community;
