MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

QUALIFICATIONS

University graduation in a related field like communications, journalism, political science, or public administration, plus four years of progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below. Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: one year of education for one year of experience or one year of experience for one year of education.

Knowledge and/or experience of the following are considered assets for this position:

  • Excellent English verbal and writing skills.
  • Excellent memory and attention to detail.
  • Excellent computer skills, good knowledge of appropriate software and ability to organize data logically.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Education’s divisional structure and areas of policy responsibility is essential, as is knowledge of Government of Alberta and ministry internal administrative policies.
  • Experience working in and knowledge of the kindergarten to Grade 12 education system are assets.
  • Experience writing and editing a variety of materials, especially in a government setting.
  • Strong working knowledge of government processes, function, and roles.Intermediate to advanced ARTS skills.

Responsibilities:

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the manager of the ECU, the team lead works closely with two administrative staff and provides leadership to two writer/editors. The primary responsibility of the team lead is to ensure correspondence, briefing notes and other materials meet standards set by the department and are delivered within required timelines. The team lead will also conduct research by connecting with ministry divisions or other ministries, and flag trending issues. As the supervisor to the writer/editors, this role will provide direction and be the first point of contact in determining appropriate responses and ensuring that direction from the Minister’s office is executed. This position will also have the responsibility of triaging and assigning action requests (ARs), monitoring ARs as they progress through the system, and for ensuring ARs are completed in a timely manner while being error-free. Secondary responsibilities include developing and maintaining process documents, training materials, and the department style guide.
The team lead also assumes the manager’s duties and responsibilities in the manager’s absence.

1. LEAD THE EDITOR/WRITERS AND PROVIDE GUIDANCE TO ENSURE TASKS ARE COMPLETED.

  • Supervises and coordinates activities for the writing team and ensures execution of ARs within the system with quality control reviews.
  • Supports consistent application of the department style guide, Canadian Press writing style, and process documents.
  • Participates in the recruitment and orientation of the writing team.
  • Assists with escalation of issues being managed by the writing team.
  • Regularly meets with team members to answer their questions and communicates information.Monitors and provides feedback on employee performance issues, and keeps the manager informed of any issues.
