Description:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. CLINICAL1. To be able to work quickly and accurately with a high degree of manualdexterity.2. To undertake blood samples from patients referred into the service in a varietyof settings (clinics and domiciliary visits), working alone with access to advicevia phone.3.
To maintain a clean and tidy clinical work area at all times.4. Maintain high level of competency in all required techniques.5. Ensure patient is positively identified.6. Identifies the best vein for taking blood samples.7.
Ensure specimens are appropriately prepared prior to being collected bycourier service, for example; undertake collection and accurately labelled inthe correct sample bottles.8. Collection of venous blood samples without harm to patient or self by followingStandard Operating Procedures / Guidelines / Policies and Procedures.9. To ensure that all documentation is completed accurately and efficiently.10. To work in line with the infection prevention and control policy.11.
The job will involve frequent exposure to body fluids, blood, urine and samplesthat are potentially infective with pathogenic, micro-organisms / viruses(including blood borne viral infections e.g. Hepatitis, HIV, nvCJD, TB).12. To take appropriate action if there is a spillage of body fluids or hazardouschemicals in order to minimise the risk to staff and public.13. To work within the approved policies and Health & Safety procedures of theTrust.14.
To keep the supply of essential equipment within the clinics and domiciliaryservice at an adequate level for service delivery.15. To help maintain appropriate stocks for phlebotomy consumables in theimmediate work area and to advise senior staff of low stocks.16. To take delivery of stores; put away stock items using appropriate liftingtechniques and identify shortages of any items to the senior staff.17. To minimise wastage of materials by appropriate stock rotation and by goodphlebotomy technique.2.
MANAGERIAL1. Making recommendations to improve service delivery.2. To liaise with other members of the team in the provision of patient care,ensuring that all relevant information is made known to the appropriatemembers.3. Ensure all patients receive a high standard of care and quality service,welcoming patients in a warm and professional manner.4.
To communicate with patients and carers whilst performing the procedure,explaining the task to be performed.5. To attend team briefs and meetings.6. Influence, motivate, support and enable colleague to contribute towards theeffectiveness and success of the service.7. To act as a positive team member to promote a positive team environment andsupport colleagues in the delivery of the service.8.
Act as a positive role model presenting a professional appearance by ensuringuniform is worn correctly, it is clean and tidy and the dress code policy isadhered to.3. EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT1. To participate in own service training and regular updating skills as directed bymanager.2. To carry out all core & mandatory/statutory training.3.
The performance of the post holder will be continually assessed forcompetence and have a PDR (appraisal). Key elements of this process will beto contribute towards the corporate objectives of the service and the Trust.4. Attend appropriate courses as agreed with manager.4. RESEARCH AND AUDIT1.
To participate in audits as and when requested.5. STANDARD REQUIREMENTS Information Governance (IG): During the post holders normal duties, they mayhave access to confidential information that can identify a patient, another member ofstaff and/or commercial information about the Trust. Staff must ensure the ongoingsecurity of this information (specifically its confidentiality, integrity and availability) atall times (both in and out of working hours) in accordance with relevant legislation,NHS guidance and professional codes of conduct. They must only access thisinformation where they have a legitimate need to know for the purpose of their role.They must only disclose this information as necessary in the course of theiremployment, with the Trusts prior agreement or for a valid legal reason.
Thisobligation shall continue indefinitely.All notes, memoranda, records and other documents (paper or electronic) of theTrust (including its partners) and in the post holders possession are and shall remainthe property of the Trust and staff shall hand them over on demand or upontermination of employment. All documents, data and information created during thecourse of employment with the Trust belong to the Trust and not the post holder.Staff must ensure the integrity of information and not do anything to put this at risk.The post holder must ensure that they are familiar with and adhere to all Trust IG andIT Systems and Security policies and procedures and complete IG training on anannual basis. They must report any IG breaches as soon as they become aware ofthem. A breach of data security may constitute a serious disciplinary offence forwhich the post holder may be dismissed.
Should the post holder breach this clauseafter their employment has ended, the Trust may take legal action against them. Code of Conduct: Maintain a consistently high standard of conduct and to providethe highest standard of service in accordance with the Trust Code of Conduct for allemployees. Employees are expected to participate in the performance review process. Service/Departmental standards: Support the development of performancestandards within the Service/Department to ensure the service is responsive to andmeeting the needs of its customers.
Finance: All Trust staff will comply with financial processes and procedures Safeguarding: The Trust has a responsibility to ensure that all children/young peopleand adults are adequately safeguarded and protected.
