Description:

The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is an independent statutory office established to protect the rights, interests and wellbeing of adults with impaired decision-making capacity, and children and young people in the child protection system and those accommodated in disability services, Authorised Mental Health Services, residential health services and youth detention centres.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise a team of guardians and provide mentoring and advice on the exercise of structured decision-making, to ensure that the team delivers a timely and responsive service to people under guardianship orders and other key stakeholders.
  • Provide advice to the Regional Manager and guardians on complex and sensitive guardianship issues,and make informed guardianship decisions to uphold the rights and interests of people with impaired capacity, in accordance with the General Principles and Health Care Principle of the Guardianship and Administration Act 2000.
  • Supervise the team’s management of guardianship clients within the Greater Brisbane region.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal registry and monitor the provision of written submissions and reports to the Tribunal, within the legislative requirements of the Guardianship and Administration Act 2000, Powers of Attorney Act 1998, the Public Guardian Act 2014, and the Disability Services Act 2006.
  • Collaborate with the Regional Manager to develop and implement effective processes to monitor and report on guardianship matters and trends.
  • Identify opportunities for business improvements, to ensure best practice in the exercise of guardianship responsibilities for people with impaired capacity and improve the operational performance of the Office of the Public Guardian.
  • Contribute to and maintain a positive and productive workplace culture that focuses on ethics and accountability.
  • Maintain effective internal and external relationships that achieve positive results for clients.
    Possession of a C class drivers’ licence is a mandatory requirement for this role, as travel is required to attend meetings, events and visits in a range of locations that are often not accessible by alternative means.
