Description:

Technical Lead (Future Marine Research Infrastructure)
National Oceanography Centre, Southampton
5-year fixed term appointment
Full time (37 hours per week)
£64,545 - £71,003
Who are we?
We are the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) - the UK’s leading institution for integrated coastal and deep ocean research. Through our ground-breaking research, collaboration, and game-changing innovation we work to gain a deeper understanding of our ocean, helping every living thing on our planet flourish.
We are made up of a dynamic and vibrant community focused on solving challenging long-term marine science problems, underpinning international and UK public policy, business and societal outcomes.
The ocean has the potential to provide the solutions to so many of the social, economic and environmental challenges we face worldwide. To truly harness the value of the ocean, we put ocean research, science and discovery at the heart of our culture.
Join us in shaping the future of oceanographic research and contribute your unique perspective to our organisation.
About the role
There is an imperative to measure the ocean if we are to chart a sustainable future on this planet, and this demands a modern, versatile and resilient research infrastructure. The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Future Marine Research Infrastructure (FMRI) programme (www.fmri.ac.uk) aims to deliver a transformative renewal of NERC’s research infrastructure so that marine science can serve society’s need to observe, understand and predict changes in the local, regional and global environment.
Hosted by the NOC, the Technical Lead will be a senior member of NERC’s FMRI leadership team helping to shape and deliver the future marine research infrastructure. It is a new role that is being created to lead the conversation with operators, developers and suppliers of marine technology. The Technical Lead will be responsible for developing our understanding of the potential of current and emerging technologies, bringing that knowledge to bear on programme decisions and developing actionable infrastructure solutions that meet the needs of the marine science community.
About you
We are looking for someone who can pick up and run with a technical development roadmap that links marine science requirements with technological developments that are sprinting ahead. Someone who can explore how the digital ecosystem is shifting the operating environment and why coherent and complementary capabilities will be increasingly important. Someone who can deliver a different way of doing things.
You will be an experienced engineer and effective communicator who can build enduring relationships with subject matter experts across diverse disciplines including: marine autonomy, sensor systems, digital infrastructure and ship technologies. You will demonstrate the ability to analyse and interpret complex user requirements, translating these into actionable solutions that you can document in a way that is understandable to senior stakeholders and decision makers.
To be successful, you will need the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. You will be able to demonstrate the flexibility and resilience to operate effectively within a complex and rapidly evolving programme environment, including the ability to manage influential stakeholders with vested interests.
