We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Department Specialist in our Energy division to perform a variety of activities, with a focus in inventory and component inspection, in support of the Target Fabrication Group at LLNL in Livermore, CA

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent and three or more years of experience in a field related to the specialized functional area or unit where assigned. Additional education may be substituted in lieu of experience.
  • Must be able to work with common hand tools and operate laboratory equipment.
  • Must have the capability to perform complex assignments with little or no direction.
  • Ability and willingness to work on systems which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, high energy, cryogens, or radioactive materials.
  • Knowledge of computer operations and applications pertinent to the field required.
  • Must be customer focused and possess strong organizational skills to maintain flow of work within the unit.
  • General knowledge of computer operations, applications, word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Must have analytical ability to read and understand detailed instructions, drawings, and specifications.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written skills to interface with all levels of internal employees and be able to accurately document and record precise information.
  • Communication skills necessary to explain technical information and respond to routine issues or situations and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours as required.
  • Performs tasks in a class 100 cleanroom requiring long periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance

Responsibilities:

  • Operates computer controlled and manually operated assembly stations and provides dimensional inspection data on meso-scale components.
  • Requires regular use of computers, instrumentation, multi-axis assembly stations, microscopes, and metrology equipment including OCMMs.
  • Interacts with resident staff and other engineering, scientific, and technical personnel from a variety of laboratory organizations.
  • Performs assembly tasks in a class 100 cleanroom including:
  • Hohlraum/LEH insertion, inner shield and HDC window installation.
  • Target base, subassembly, and final target dimensional metrology.
  • Capsule fill tube assembly inspections to verify suitability prior to further assembly process steps.
  • Bonding tasks after final integration steps are completed.
  • Constructs and installs multiple diagnostic backlighters for different target types.
  • Assembles diagnostic band subassemblies for various experiments.
  • May be required to perform high vacuum leak testing of components at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Handles and inspects “high value” and extremely fragile components.
  • Operates and optimizes robotic assembly stations.
  • Diagnoses and corrects operational problems or trouble sources in equipment or tests.
  • Fabricates prototype components from engineering prints, informal drawings and sketches.
  • Provides accurate and organized documentation.
  • Works in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Monitors all operations for regulatory and safety compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
