Position Overview:
Building a modern public service requires modern, progressive thinking. Kitchener is at a pivotal point in our digital transformation journey; our goal is to create more dynamic service experiences for citizens and staff. It’s an ambitious goal - so we’re looking for ambitious people. People who are compelled to ask, ‘why not?’ and ‘how can I help?’ People who are excited to build a Digital Kitchener.
As a Technology Project Manager, you will lead technology implementations by building project teams with business stakeholders, technologists, vendor partners, and subject-matter experts. You will maintain relationships with internal colleagues (your clients), serving as a conduit to the staff and resources required for the success of their project and fulfillment of their business goals. You will gather requirements, confirm alignment between business process and the related systems, and monitor scope, budget, and risks as you lead delivery and handoff of a production technology implementation.

You are:

  • A Relationship Builder
  • You foster team engagement and understand that relationships take work.
  • You build trust by doing what you say you will.
  • You value transparency and create opportunities to exchange ideas and information.

An Innovator

  • You ask thoughtful questions.
  • You can spot opportunities to do things differently and bring those ideas to the table.
  • You align business process to technology implementation, identifying gaps, trade-offs, and alternatives.
  • You strive to improve our processes and the effectiveness of our team to support the mandates of the organization.

A Planner and Problem-Solver

  • You break work into logical parts and deliver value incrementally.
  • You create order from chaos, coordinating schedules and ensuring the project team delivers value on time and on budget.
  • You take action to minimize risks and respond to issues as they arise, bringing together the right people to solve the problem.
  • You use communication, collaboration, and documentation to keep the team progressing towards a shared goal.

You might be interested in this role if:

  • You want a role focused on quality, customer service, and continuous improvement.
  • You enjoy learning the ins and outs of municipal processes and technology solutions.
  • You get a sense of fulfillment by seeing a project through from start to finish and enjoy reflecting on the lessons you learn along the way.
  • You enjoy learning processes related to project management, design thinking, and business process improvement, and can select the right combination of tools from your toolbox to address a challenge.

Responsibilities:

  • Leverage project management methodology and the Digital Transformation & Strategy team’s Idea to Action process to lead several simultaneous technology implementation projects.
  • Communicate actively with project stakeholders, leadership, and teammates to maintain relationships, share information, and inspire great ideas.
  • Anticipate risks, develop risk responses, and methodically address challenges when they arise.
  • Resolve conflict within the project team or with vendors. Use discretion to determine how to seek support from leadership and peers to address conflict.
  • Gather information from subject matter experts in the project team, and lead decision-making to define an implementation path. As the project progresses and new information and additional details arise, ensure iterative decisions align to the project goals.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation to track the project from initiation through completion. Leverage this documentation to demonstrate progress, keep the team aligned to goals, track decisions, and communicate the value this work is delivering.
  • Organize, prioritize, and manage timelines to ensure that multiple projects progress simultaneously.
  • Conceptualize business process solutions that consider business units, customers, and legislated requirements with the skill to integrate technology in the solution to ensure the process is effective and efficient.
  • Apply analytical and leadership skills to assist the business areas in developing viable project proposals.
  • Participate in ideation discussions, solution exploration workshops, problem-solving sessions, and team meetings to support and collaborate with colleagues on the Digital Transformation & Strategy team.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
