JOB SUMMARY:

The Cook is responsible for the preparation, storage, and service of menu items to the required standard. Responsibilities also include the maintenance of the work area in a clean, safe, and orderly manner, and the general direction of kitchen staff in the absence of the General Manager. Using production checks and standardized recipes, the Cook is responsible for ensuring that proper meals are prepared and served on time to residents and guests. Ensures work areas are maintained in a safe and sanitary condition. Assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and other staff members. All duties are performed in the best interest of the residents and their families, and in accordance with VRS Communities Society (VRS) vision, mission and values statements.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be skilled at problem-solving, including being able to identify issues and resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to prioritize and plan work activities to use time efficiently.
  • Must be dependable, able to follow instructions, respond to management direction, and must be able to provide performance through management feedback.
  • Must have strong administrative capabilities with basic computer skills.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relations by displaying tact, courtesy and patience with residents and staff.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in the composition of written materials.
  • Must pass a Criminal Record Check.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

  • Certified Chef from an accredited school
  • WHMIS Certificate
  • Food Safe Level 1
  • Serving it Right

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 2 years experience in volume food preparation and/or supervision in the hospitality industry
  • Previous experience working with seniors is considered an asset.

    Pay: $28.00-$31.00 per hour
    Expected hours: 37.5 per week

Responsibilities:

  1. Manages and maintain the daily operation of the Food Services department according to Lakeside’s standard. Able to delegate appropriate functions to subordinates.
  2. Prepares in advance (for GM’s approval) an appetizing, well balanced 5-week menu in accordance with Canada’s Food Standards and Lakeside Gardens individual resident needs. Maintains on computer master plan of menu rotation and recipes for all planned menus. Maintains on a daily basis, a list of all food served, including vegetables and desserts, to repetitions are kept to a minimum.
  3. Meets with all new residents with 72-hours of move-in and completes a dietary assessment of each resident. Maintains and monitors changing resident dietary needs.
  4. Plans and conducts a regular Food Advisory meeting with residents to ensure satisfaction with food services.
  5. Responsible for planning and executing (i.e. administrating) of all food service operations, inclusive of hands-on cooking.
  6. Responsible for hiring, training, empowering, evaluating and terminating chefs.
  7. Responsible for maintaining food cost control (including taking accurate monthly physical inventories), menu planning and costing of same and meeting budgets.
  8. Responsible for suggesting cost effective methods of purchasing from various suppliers.
  9. Responsible for purchasing of food and supplies for Food Service department as per established company procedures, as well as inventory level controls and appropriate storage. Is also responsible for accurately coding all invoices relating to the purchases.
  10. Responsible for maintaining all Food Safe/Serve it Right/HACCP standard, etc.
  11. Responsible for marketing of catering services.
  12. Responsible for ensuring all Lakeside SOP’s relative to this position are followed completely.
  13. Thorough understanding of the Union Collective Agreement.
  14. Provides support to other departments as required.
  15. Ensures dress code, job duties, cleaning schedules and food safe principles including HACCP meets department standards, ensures high quality resident service.
  16. Prepares monthly reports and other administrative reports as required - on a timely accurate basis. Maintain a filing system containing copies of all items including but not limited to - maintenance, temperature logs, all daily menus, cleaning schedules, etc.
  17. Performs other related duties as delegated by the General Manager.
