This position is located at our Chico, Concord Ave Primary Care Clinic.
POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the RN Clinic Coordinator Medical Assistant functions as a multi skilled health care professional in an ambulatory setting. This position is essential to set the tone for the patient’s experience as they are one of the first and last team members patients interact with. Supporting patients by observing NVIH Core Values is essential to incumbents successfully completing these responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list, but rather to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Support medical team with rooming patients and preparing the patient and provider for the patient experience such as documenting patient reason for visit and taking vitals and assist provider when clinic policy dictates that a female be present for gynecological exams.
  • Performs nursing laboratory duties and tasks including but not limited to, urine dipsticks, urine pregnancy tests, urine micro albumins, Hemoglobin A1C, Blood Sugars, Flu Screening, RSV Screening (that is not nasopharyngeal), COVID-19 Screening, Lipids and strep screens in compliance with all applicable standards, regulations and medical clinic policy.
  • Performs or administers procedures associated with sharps such as blood draws (with close attention to required specimen handling and processing), perform applicable injections, and log or record per NVIH procedures.
  • Performs various services and procedures such as eye screening for patients requesting such, audiometric screening in compliance with all applicable standards, regulations, and Medical Clinic policy and EKGs.
  • Responsible for completing appropriate documents and collecting information for third party billing and medical charting for various support programs such as WIC, SOFP, BCEDP, and CHDP programs.
  • Maintains the standards of patient care and implements the policies and procedures of the Medical Department.
  • Support the overall functioning of the Medical Clinic by following instructions and observing lines of communication as their position relates to the team.
  • Responsible for communicating problems identified involving personnel, medical staff, patient, families, and the general public to Nursing and Medical Leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
  • Current national certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants or state certification from California Certifying Board of Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Six (6) months of training in Certification in phlebotomy preferred.
  • One (1) year experience as a medical assistant preferred.
  • Electronic Health Records experience required.
  • Ability to perform blood draws, records lab draws in log book with accurate attention to patient name and type of test. Accurately labels specimens and fills out requisitions completely and correctly.
  • Ability to perform applicable injections as outlined in Medical Clinic Policy and Procedures and VFC program.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in electronic patient scheduling. Understanding the amount of time required for specific appointments.
  • Ability to learn and understand medical billing as pertains to essential functions, such as advising staff or patients regarding self-pay costs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, able to effectively relate via the telephone and in-person to serve the needs of clinic patients/clients/visitors in a manner that is efficient and productive.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills with acute attention to detail with spatial awareness;
  • Ability to understand and adhere to established policies, procedures, protocols, and the ability to make timely and sound decisions.
  • Proven ability to engage in team collaboration and demonstrates a caring and compassionate commitment to the patient and their unique circumstances.
  • Must have reliable transportation and engage in regular attendance.
