POSITION DESCRIPTION
Our Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) is currently seeking a Test Development Technologist to join the team. In this role, you will perform and be responsible for a variety of complex and independent tasks involving the planning, organizing, data analysis and implementation of laboratory test development activities. You will also provide technical support functions to assist medical laboratory technologists and other laboratory staff with laboratory operations as required. The Test Development Technologist will in Routine Chemistry within the Division of Biochemistry
The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by providing diagnostic information that allows for early selection of best treatment options. DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health care providers in Canada and around the world. The department comprises of five divisions: Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All DPLM laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.

Responsibilities:
Laboratory Test Development
- Develop new laboratory procedures/methods as assigned.
- Develop evaluation and validation protocols for equipment, test kits and test methods.
- Evaluate new equipment or test kits prior to purchase.
- Validate new equipment, test kits, test methods or LIS upgrades prior to implementation.
- Collect, analyze and interpret data relevant to the development of new test methods and the evaluation and validation of new equipment or test kits.
- Prepare evaluation and validation reports.
- Participate in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to support new equipment and/or test methods.
- Participate in the implementation of new equipment, test kits, test methods or LIS upgrades.
- Operate, calibrate and maintain relevant laboratory equipment.
- Review journals, abstracts and scientific literature to keep abreast of relevant new developments and obtain information regarding the design and development of original procedures and techniques.
- Participate in research development, special projects, or other duties as assigned.
- Summarize test development activities for review by the Chief, on an annual basis.
Laboratory Service
- Strictly follows Standard Operating Procedures.
- Operate, calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment, as assigned.
- Practice and perform laboratory tests and procedures, as assigned, accurately and precisely within defined time expectations (TATs).
- Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take remedial action, and documents action, within scope of practice, as required.
- Report failures, issues & action taken to immediate supervisor.
- Assess results against diagnosis to ensure relevant results correspond with known patient data, as appropriate.
- Recognize abnormal and critical results, and take appropriate actions according to the established SOP, as required.
- Follow the established communication system.
- Follow inventory control system and communicate status to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies.
- Perform all other duties as required.
