Engineering and Program Management: This role is part of Enterprise Program Management (EPM), where we provide technical standards, tools, processes, training, and subject matter expertise for product engineering and manufacturing. EPM allows all Blue Origin business units to benefit from commonly used capabilities, hardware, and software and assists business units in identifying, selecting, and training engineers from both inside and outside the organization.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists and technicians, you will be responsible for organizing and executing plans to characterize material samples using a variety of laboratory tests and equipment. In this hands-on position, you’ll work with engineers and other technicians to validate the materials and processes used to build rocket engines.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform metal lab analyses, including mechanical testing, hardness testing, metallographic preparation, and microstructural evaluations.
  • Perform forensic analyses such as Foreign Object Debris (FOD) collection and evaluation, fracture analysis, and basic failure analysis.
  • Use specialized equipment such as SEM/EDS, XRF, FTIR, UTM, Microhardness system, and metallographic polishing systems.
  • Analyze, document, and communicate results to stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate strict attention to detail in executing laboratory analyses.
  • Follow lab procedures for safety, quality, and accuracy.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Safely work with hazardous systems containing chemicals, heat, and/or high pressure

Must be physically able to:

  • Work with and around chemicals and other hazardous materials

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge related to one or more of the lab specific responsibilities
  • Hands-on experience executing test plans
  • Basic engineering laboratory skills: weights and measures, chemical hygiene, materials safety planning, personal protective equipment, contamination control, job hazard analysis, and work instruction
  • 1+ Year lab experience in a metals, wet, forensic, and/or academic lab
  • Must have a working knowledge and experience with optical and digital microscopy
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S. in Materials Engineering or related field
  • 1+ Year experience in a metals lab
  • Knowledge and experience using an SEM/EDS system
  • Experience developing and implementing 5S practices in a lab environment.
  • Spectrum analysis experience (IR, XRF, EDS of special interest)
