Therapy Assistant Practitioner - Haematology-Oncology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Therapy Assistant Practitioner to join the Nottingham City Hospital Haematology Rehabilitation Team at NUH. We are looking for a motivated, experienced individual who is looking to help shape a new rehabilitation service, blending physiotherapy and occupational therapy to deliver well rounded, holistic rehabilitation to patients with blood cancer. You will work closely with both the physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams.
Nottingham is a nationally recognised transplant unit for adults with haematological malignancy and a specialist tertiary service for lymphoma, myeloma and other haematological malignancies. The department actively participates in clinical trials and is a major recruiter into clinical trials run by the NCRN. The Russell Haematology Centre has two wards with outliers on a third. The programme at NUH is amongst the largest of the 53 centres in the UK - undertaking over 5% of all UK BMT activity, recently becoming an accredited CAR T-Cell therapy centre.
We require a keen, conscientious, reliable team player with the ability to use their initiative and work flexibly. It is essential that the post holder has experience working within the rehabilitation or exercise setting, within physiotherapy or occupational therapy. Due to the role working across two different teams, the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and be organised and enthusiastic.

Managing and prioritising your own caseload independently, assessing patients’ needs and progressing treatment plans to facilitate safe discharge from hospital.
Assisting the qualified therapists in the haematology rehabilitation team and work closely with all members of the MDT.
Recognising improvements or deterioration in the patient’s condition and modifying your approach accordingly.
Participating in supervision, learning and development activities, supported by an annual appraisal and colleagues.
There will be a full induction to the post and regular in-service training provided by both physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.

The Physiotherapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 800 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

This role can be physically demanding and involves direct patient care in support of and under the supervision of registered staff, including assisting with patient transfers, mobilisation and limb focussed exercise plans.
Although therapy is focussed on promoting patient independence where possible, the role may require assisting with washing, oral care, toileting and positioning. Due to the complex needs of our patient group, the successful candidate will be patient and empathetic. The ability to build a rapport with a diverse patient population, and their families, will be essential to engage and motivate patients in their rehabilitation. This job will require you to work with inpatients; therefore, you will be required to wear the appropriate level of personal protective equipment (PPE).
There will also be a non-clinical aspect to this role, involving the use of computer systems and data entry, and making onward referrals. You will also be involved in wider team service improvement projects.
