An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and suitably experienced Physiotherapist/ Occupational Therapist to join the Therapy Management team at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
You will be responsible for the operational management of a therapy service and leading on service developments and quality improvement initiatives. Initially the role will be to provide operational management and leadership to the stroke and neurology therapy teams as well as some smaller community therapy teams. There is an opportunity to engage in some clinical duties as appropriate to the role.
The postholder is responsible for the operational management of aspects of the therapy services. This includes responsibility for all aspects of staff management, governance, patient and staff safety, risk management and service quality across the area(s).
The postholder has responsibilities related to the professional leadership role. These involve responsibility for assessing and interpreting the impact of NHS policy and/or local development proposals on aspects of the service, communicating them effectively to staff and advising the Head of Service.
The postholder is responsible for leading on service delivery and influencing and promoting the contribution that the service can make to support NHS transformation in line with the NHS Plan. This will include working in partnership with organisations across Place to deliver highly effective, quality, patient centred services.
The post holder will act as a source of expertise in the provision of advice and information to the Trust and partner organisations, which is evidence based, and tailored to the needs of the individual, population and group or organisation.
The postholder will be responsible for managing a delegated therapy budget, ensuring that resources are utilised effectively.

  • To have responsibility for the operational management of aspects of the service, managing the work of the team leaders and their teams.
  • To analyse, establish, monitor and adjust service, organisational and staffing priorities and objectives to meet Trust and NHS objectives.
  • To be responsible for the development and implementation of protocols & guidelines.
  • To be responsible for managing a delegated therapy budget, ensuring that resources are utilised effectively.
  • To work with the Trust education team and the local HEI’s to create an increased number of student placements to increase workforce supply.
  • To ensure that Trust Policies are implemented within the service, developing local procedures where required.
  • To communicate highly complex service related information to senior managers and clinicians within the Trust, Primary Care, Social Services and other external agencies to improve understanding of the service and the contribution that can be made to improving patient care and reducing health inequalities.
  • To give formal presentations to senior management groups, business meetings, staff, external agencies, imparting service related information; where the audience may have conflicting agendas and priorities.
  • To negotiate and monitor the delivery of activity within the trust, liaising with service managers and clinical leads/clinicians as necessary.
  • To negotiate service agreements with commissioners, and monitor performance against agreed activity targets; implementing adjustments as required.
  • To formulate plans and business cases to improve services, working in negotiation, planning with other managers from within the trust and external agencies.
  • To manage complaints within the service, undertaking investigations, meeting complainants, implementing key learning points and taking remedial action as necessary.
  • To ensure that methodical and structured systems are in place for the recording, monitoring and storage of patient data, in accordance with professional and statutory requirements.
  • To ensure that NHS policy, and other guidance is implemented within the service, working in collaboration with other services as appropriate.
  • To be responsible for the management of staff including recruitment, career progression and development, productivity and performance management, other disciplinary and work evaluation issues.
  • To ensure that there is adequate staff cover at all times across the service, within available resource and priorities. Adjust staffing levels across the service to meet quality standards, agreed activity targets and service level agreements.
  • To have responsibility for the development and implementation of systems to ensure adherence to Trust policies, e.g. disciplinary and grievance, appraisals, sickness absence, recruitment and retention.
  • To contribute to workforce planning to ensure a flexible modern Therapy workforce that is fit for purpose.
  • To lead change management within the service including the support and encouragement of staff through modernisation to improve patient and health services.
  • To identify opportunities for extended scope practitioner roles and other new roles and promote them within and outside the Trust.
  • To be a key source of highly specialist advice regarding professional practice, and relevant professional codes of conduct.
  • To contribute to developing and implementing service policies to meet the requirements of the Health Professional Council and professional bodies regarding the competence and registration of staff.
  • To be responsible for the development and implementation of service governance procedures, to achieve Trust Policy, and risk management standards.
  • To develop systems and structures which promote high quality evidence base and protocol driven practice across the aspects of the service you are responsible for.
  • To analyse and interpret a range of highly complex service and organisational facts and situations, in both manual and electronic format, in order to optimize business and performance management and inform decision making.
  • To be accountable for the delivery of safe, high quality patient care programmes and pathways
  • To ensure that all practice is evidence based
  • To lead specialist service developments, and to ensure appropriate engagement of senior level staff, to facilitate the implementation of changes in clinical practice, professional practice and service delivery.
  • To work as an autonomous practitioner within current ethical professional and legal frameworks.
  • To undertake clinical/professional practice as required, keeping up to date with developments
  • To encourage patient and public involvement at all times, responding to ensure improvements to patient services.
  • To be responsible for the management and professional development of the Team Leaders and their teams.
  • To ensure that all staff and self have an annual appraisal and development plan in line with Trust policy.
  • To ensure all staff and self are compliant with relevant mandatory training requirements.
  • To ensure that Continuing Professional Development systems are in place in line with professional requirements.
  • To have responsibility for developing a learning environment across aspects of the service which encourages staff at all levels to realise their potential.
  • To be responsible for the systematic development of all members of your team so that they can contribute to NHS and Trust objectives.
  • Work with the Trust Education department and in partnership with Higher Education Institutes to develop post-graduate programmes to meet identified learning needs in staff.
  • To develop robust systems to facilitate the development of staff undertaking extended roles outside their usual scope of practice. To ensure compliance with mandatory requirements such as approval by the advancing practice committee, development of patient group directives, prescribing regulations.
  • To be responsible for the provision of high quality undergraduate clinical training placements; in accordance with Higher Education Institutes quality assurance standards and Health & Social Care Professions Council (HCPC) requirements.
  • To initiate and co-ordinate a range of research and development activities within the service, including the implementation of research evidence into practice, development of evidence based practice and protocols, use of complex audit and outcome measures to drive service improvements.
  • To monitor the impact of changes in practice.
  • To facilitate and provide guidance to support staff in research activities, including guidance on internal/external funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the development of multi professional research proposals.
  • To provide robust evidence of compliance with professional and performance standards, and external service reviews e.g. Care Quality Commission standards.
  • Ensure that all staff participates in relevant specialty Clinical Governance activity.
