Description:

At Division Rock Tools in Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions we have an opportunity for a master thesis in our Hard Materials R&D team – an investigation of cemented carbide sintering shrinkage and microstructural evolution when using Co from recycled raw materials. Are you up for the challenge?
Shortly about us
Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is a business area of the Sandvik Group and a leading supplier of equipment and tools, services, support, and technical solutions for the mining industry. We conduct business in a sustainable and responsible manner. To achieve this, we always act in line with our high ethical standards, putting safety first and always showing consideration for the environment, materials circularity, and the communities in which we operate.
When and where?
The location for this master thesis is at our site in Västberga, Stockholm during the first or second quarter of 2025.
Your mission
The scope of this thesis is to evaluate the shrinkage and melting behavior in WC-Co containing cobalt from recycled material in comparison to WC-Co produced using commercial grade Co-powder. The cemented carbide model compositions in this study are selected both to enhance the differences and to resemble production grades. The work includes conducting experiments at elevated temperatures, such as dilatometry, and evaluation of the WC-Co materials using advanced material characterization methods.
Your background
We’re primarily looking for someone studying materials science, physics, or chemistry. You should have a genuine interest in experimental and hands-on work and have good writing skills. Experience in conducting independent experimental work and materials characterization is highly valued. The diploma work also includes thermodynamic modelling of the proposed compositions.
Our culture
At Sandvik, we’re tech driven, innovative and entrepreneurial. We believe that success is a team effort so we value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive culture where people can be themselves and reach their full potential. So, we invest in supporting each other, learning together and celebrating our differences. Visit our
