Description:

BACKGROUND

A 3D-printer can only print a model with a certain maximum speed. If you print too fast, the plastic might end up in the wrong place and the final product will not match the expectations and the sturdiness of the product could be decreased. On the other hand, if you print too slowly, the final product will look good, but the printing will take extra time which could lead to other complications.
A 3D-printer already has some simple way of reducing or increasing the printer speed during certain parts of the print. But the maximum allowed speed is set before the print is started and cannot be changed during the actual printing. By introducing a live adjustment of the maximum printer speed allowed, the time required to print could be reduced while still maintaining high quality in the final product.

WORK DESCRIPTION

The goal of this thesis is to investigate the feasibility of implementing a dynamic speed setting in 3D-printers. The maximum allowed speed should be calculated live on the printer or alternatively on a Raspberry Pi connected to the printer. Ways to calculate the maximum speed must be investigated. It is also necessary to examine when to update the maximum allowed speed for the best performance.

We think the thesis will contain the following parts,

  • Investigate the feasibility and possibility of implementing a dynamic maximum speed setting for 3D-printers.
  • Implement and optimize the functionality so that consistent results can be produced as well as evaluating the feature.
  • Comparing the results against a regular printer with different quality and cost factors in mind.
  • Comparing the results to other methods that already exist.
