Description:

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our around 1,400 employees work for a sustainable, economical, safe and socially fair energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our research priorities of energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use. Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, spin-off companies and global cooperation, we shape the sustainable transformation of the energy system.
Would you like to actively help shape the energy transition and write your thesis in this area? With us you will find the experts and the environment to achieve these goals.
Our group at Fraunhofer ISE deals with the conversion of “green” hydrogen from renewable electricity into liquid energy carriers ("e-fuels") and chemicals. Sustainable aviation fuels (“SAF”) are a particularly important target product in this context, as they can directly replace fossil kerosene and thereby significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation. The need for very high energy densities and special physical properties places high demands on alternative propulsion technologies or energy sources for aircraft, so that kerosene will continue to be the basis for air travel in the coming decades. At Fraunhofer ISE, an innovative process is being developed for the production of the SAF, which is to be examined in detail as part of the planned work. The topic of your thesis is the “Simulative investigation of an efficient power-to-jet fuel production” and in particular the optimization and evaluation of energy requirements and process efficiencies.
For our group “Synthetic Products: Separation Processes and Production Technologies” we are looking for a student assistant with the opportunity to write a bachelor’s or master’s thesis as soon as possible.

Requisition Number: 74685

Responsibilities:

  • Gain insights into the application of green hydrogen and power-to-jet fuel.
  • Conduct a literature search of the synthesis within power-to-jet fuel process.
  • Simulate technical processes (e.g. reaction, distillation) on Aspen Plus® software.
  • Simulation of the overall process to produce synthetic jet fuel via the methanol route using the Aspen Plus® software at an industrial scale-up.
  • Work on process integration concepts and heat network development.
  • Compare several solution methods for different process simulations.
  • Evaluate the technical performance of the designed process through a set of key performance indicators to evaluate efficiencies.Prepare presentations on the progress of your work.
