SUMMARY:

AGAT Laboratories is currently seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Thin Section Sample Preparation Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation of geological thin sections used for petrographic analysis.

Duties:

  • Prepare high-quality geological thin sections of rock, mineral, and concrete samples for petrographic analysis.
  • Label, catalog, and track samples throughout the preparation process.
  • Ensure incoming non-sample deliveries are properly processed.
  • Ensure all safety procedures are followed.
  • Maintain and operate equipment such as rock saws, grinders, polishing machines, and microscopes.
  • Ensure samples are free of contamination and prepared to exacting standards.
  • Work collaboratively with team members for assigned projects.
  • Keep detailed records of sample preparation processes and results.
  • Responsible to maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Review safety data sheets for all chemicals before use to understand potential hazards, proper handling, and emergency procedures.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A degree or diploma in geology, material science, or a related field is an asset.
  • Previous experience in geological sample preparation, particularly in thin section preparation.
  • Knowledge of geological concepts, rock types, and minerals is an asset.
  • Good English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience with other geological or material science sample preparation techniques (e.g., core sample cutting, powder preparation for XRD).
  • Attention to detail and a strong understanding of the importance of sample quality in geological analysis.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with MS Office.
  • Organized and attention to details with ability to problem solve.

Work Environment: This position requires a person to primarily stand for extended periods in addition to sitting and lifting throughout the shift in a laboratory environment. Manual dexterity is required to perform repetitive tasks. PPE is required where applicable.
