Description:

The Third Engineer is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and operation of the engine room and machinery on board the vessel. This role involves supporting the Chief and Second Engineers in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of the ship’s mechanical systems, engines, and auxiliary equipment.

Job Description:

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of main engines, auxiliary engines, and associated machinery.
  • Monitor and manage the engine room and machinery spaces, ensuring proper functioning and efficiency.
  • Perform routine checks and inspections of machinery and equipment.
  • Conduct scheduled and preventive maintenance on engines, pumps, compressors, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair machinery and equipment malfunctions under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Maintain records of maintenance and repairs performed on equipment.
  • Stand engine room watch as assigned, monitoring machinery operation, fuel consumption, and other operational parameters.
  • Ensure that engine room safety procedures and protocols are followed at all times.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and procedures, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Participate in safety drills and emergency response activities as required.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and shipboard policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of engine room operations, maintenance activities, and fuel consumption.
  • Report any irregularities, malfunctions, or safety concerns to the Chief Engineer or Second Engineer.
  • Engage in ongoing training and professional development to stay updated on engineering practices, safety protocols, and maritime regulations.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of junior engine room staff and cadets.

Requirements:

  • Diploma or degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in engine room operations on ships or similar marine environments is preferred.
  • Valid STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) certifications, including Basic Safety Training and Engine Room Watchkeeping.
  • Proficiency in mechanical systems, engine operations, and troubleshooting. Strong understanding of safety procedures and regulatory compliance.
