Description:

Moorfields Eye Hospital is working along with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology to construct a world leading centre for eye health, the Oriel. Oriel will bring together both the research and innovation of the Institute and the clinical activity of the Hospital in a single building, which is in construction and due for completion in 2027.
In advance of this move we are looking to start the process of bringing together departments which will be co-localised and work together in a single area in Oriel called the Tissue Centre. We are therefore looking for staff members to operate on rotation across three currently distinct department, which will be on rotation but also flex as services require support.
The successful candidate will have a drive to work across these areas and to learn the processes as we go through this transformative change, such that they can contribute to the future of the Tissue Centre and assist in shaping the workforce and workflows within.
The Department of Eye Pathology is a centrally funded Cellular Pathology department which provides a national service as part of the National Specialist Ophthalmic Pathology Service (NSOPS), along with other departments nationally. Here the role would be routine technical aspects of histopathology, including dissection, embedding, microtomy and staining, but also other tasks commensurate to the laboratory workload. The Department is accredited by UKAS, so there is a quality management element to all tasks, which will be reflected in other departments, such as Pathology Services.
Path Services are within the main hospital and collate and despatch a variety of tests (blood/haematology/serology, microbiology and genetics) to external pathology providers for testing, before receiving the results which need to be processed through to the requesting clinician. The Path Services team look after point of care and phlebotomy whilst ensuring the required consumables are within clinics and network sites as needed.
Finally the Moorfields Lions Eye Bank procures and distributes transplant and research corneas and sclera, plus commercially available human material to theatres and network sites for use in operations. There is an administrative need to identify recipients and issue the appropriate material in advance of the surgery to ensure the surgeon has what they need for the surgery and that everything is tracked in line with the requirements of the Human Tissue Authority (HTA).
At Moorfields, we provide more than just an excellent career and great colleagues to work with. We also offer:
