This is a 16-week position starting on May 5, 2025. The term may extend up to August 31, 2025, offering flexibility to accommodate scheduling needs throughout the summer.

Purpose
Reporting to the Director of Economic Development, Tourism & Culture, the primary role of the Tourism Marketing Student is to support departmental communications strategies, with a strong emphasis on tourism. This position is responsible for supporting brand awareness and creating content to support marketing programs for tourism, including photography and graphic design.
The Tourism Marketing Student also acts as an ambassador, providing information to visitors and general public at special events; delivering tourism collateral to businesses and industry stakeholders and assisting Grey Roots to develop a regional tourism information hub.

Responsibilities

  • Learn about activities, businesses and services operating in Grey County by learning from department staff, and self-education using existing marketing materials, internet searches, inquiries, etc.
  • Learn the geographic area of Grey County, road names, locations of waterfalls, beaches, places to eat and sleep, places of interest, etc. to relay this information to visitors and give directions.
  • Learn about the various resident and visitor sectors (age, interests, spending habits) to be able to competently match and suggest Grey County products to suit their needs for a more interesting and complete visitor experience
  • Create engaging content, including photos, videos, and stories through graphic design.
  • Assist in updating visitgrey.ca with fresh content.
  • Assist in new product development, including research for maps, guides, and itineraries.
  • Assist in shipping maps and brochures to visitor centres and businesses throughout Grey County as required.
  • Assist in filling literature requests and send by mail or courier as required.
  • Schedule and set-up site visits, including the Grey County 10’ x 10’ tourism tent, table, and materials at signature events to greet residents and visitors, providing them with relevant information and assistance.
  • Educate the public about responsible tourism, local products, and experiences.
  • Safely engage with the public and provide information and answer questions including alternative outdoor recreation areas and attractions.
  • Educate the public about available products and services they may seek to compliment their outdoor experience, such as food, beverage, shopping etc.
  • Maintain visitor statistics for analysis.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Valid “G” class driver’s license & clean drivers abstract.
  • A full-time student during the preceding academic year who intends to return to school full-time in the upcoming academic year working towards a post-secondary diploma/degree in travel, tourism, communications, or related field. Depending on funding programs, this requirement may be waived.
  • Good organizational, time management, verbal and written communication skills, ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, problem solve, and handle multiple duties and interruptions effectively.
  • Experience with digital devices and digital communications; including Microsoft, Canva and social media platforms.
  • Experience creating engaging content; including photo, video, blog writing, etc.
  • Friendly, outgoing, courteous personality with a basic knowledge of Grey County geography, roads, businesses, and activities; a strong teammate.
  • Physically fit with the ability frequently lift and carry boxes of marketing materials up to 16 kg (35 lbs.).
  • Previous customer service experience and training is an asset.

Working Conditions
Normal working hours are a 35-hour week, including weekends. Flexibility is required to deal with special or multiple event participation during peak summer periods. Required to maintain a pleasant, professional public image of the County to visitors, residents, industry, and government organizations.
Works in public spaces indoors and outdoors with the ability to juggle priorities, deal with frequent interruptions and changing demands during the course of a workday while maintaining an approachable, pleasant, professional, and positive demeanour.

Impact of Error

  • If messages do not reach intended audiences, it will limit the benefit to the local economy.
  • Failure to exercise diplomacy when dealing with tourism partners may damage partnership initiatives.
  • Ineffective or inappropriate communications have the potential of creating a poor public image of the County and may damage our image as tourism destination.
