EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATION(S):

  • Associate’s Degree from a college or university accredited in US or two years of direct experience required; degree major, or area of concentration or related field in Accounting or Finance preferred
  • Three years of bookkeeping or accounting experience or any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties required; experience in government accounting preferred
  • Three years of customer service experience required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to effectively use financial applications, JD Edwards OneWorld preferred
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook required
  • Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and implement applicable Federal and State statutes and regulations required
  • Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and implement Lee County Ordinance as applicable to TDT required
  • Ability to work extended hours
  • Ability to effectively measure and deliver statistics
  • Proficiency in business English and business math required
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing

Responsibilities:

The Inspector General Department vision is to promote public trust by providing our stakeholders with an independent and objective assessment of accountability and transparency by fostering integrity and promoting efficient, cost-effective Lee County government operations.
The Tourist Development Tax Department performs the collection, audit, and enforcement of the BOCC’s Tourist Development Tax. Provides education and administers applicable tax laws and regulations fairly and consistently. Conducts research, audits, and enforcement activities to ensure the highest level of compliance and to provide proactive detection and prevention of Tourist Development Tax Fraud. Strives to provide a “fair and level playing field” for those dealers who are responsible to collect and remit this valuable pass through tax to Lee County.
The Tourist Tax Coordinator is responsible for maintaining all of the Tourist Development Tax databases active, inactive and closed accounts. High attention to detail, data entry accuracy and the ability to interact with the public in a highly professional demeanor are necessary for this position.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain TDT Excise database of all active, inactive and closed accounts
  • Keep current and maintain all TDT Excise database taxpayer information to include but not limited to: current ownership and contact name(s), mailing and rental addresses, email address and phone numbers
  • Monitor Tourist Tax Collections and Tourist Tax general email boxes
  • Handle all Tourist Tax Collections: mail, scanning, shredding, faxes and telephones
  • Prepare daily deposit. (Excise, RDSO, ACH/E-Check)
  • Run daily balancing reports, post payments, generate and print tax returns as necessary
  • Prepare correspondence for all active, delinquent, new, closed, inactive, or accounts with a balance due greater than $5, refund request and credits
  • Accept payments, handle taxpayer inquires (over the phone, by appointment, email or through written correspondence)
  • Record audit assessments
  • Reconcile monthly tourist tax collections to general ledger
  • Reconcile audit receivable to general ledger each month
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports to Deputy Internal Audit Officer/Inspector General (DIAO/IG) or designee, State of Florida, and the Revenue Department
  • Responsible for updating interest rate table in tourist tax subsidiary
  • Review annually, all Florida Statutes relating to the collection and administration of Tourist Tax and advise DIAO/IG or designee of all changes
  • Work with TDT Auditors in the recording of audit assessments and the posting of these payments
  • Submit activity reports the DIAO/IG or designee
