Description:
Job Advert
We are seeking to employ Trainee Animal Technicians into permanent positions based within the Biological Support Unit (BSU). This position is an opportunity for those with no industry-specific experience but with a proven interest in working with animals. We will not consider applications from those with existing experience as an animal technician. Full information on the BSU is available via the Institute’s website.
Structured training will be provided over the course of a nine-month probation period. Following training, the post-holder will be responsible for the care and welfare of rodents housed at various levels of containment that are standard to the industry, such as IVCs, and more specialised containment systems.
The post-holder will be required to complete the IAT Level 2 Diploma and will attend the training necessary to gain a Home Office Personal Licence. Upon successful completion of probation, completion of the IAT diploma, and routine use of a Home Office personal licence, the Trainee Animal Technician will be promoted to the Experienced Animal Technician role (BI9). Experienced Animal Technicians retain a commitment to animal husbandry and also have a weekly commitment to performing regulated procedures.
Staff will not be asked to perform any tasks until they have received full training from a supervisor/mentor in accordance with pre-written SOPs. The role involves varied tasks, physical activity, and an element of repetition.
Staff will be encouraged to attend college on a day-release basis following the Institute of Animal Technology (IAT) qualifications and others (e.g. HNC, degree). Animal Technicians may be required to work in other areas of the Small Animal Facility.
You will be required to be part of an overtime rota covering animal care and procedural work during weekends and public holidays.
Full job specification and role requirements can be found attached to this vacancy. Part-time applicants will have reduced duties according to hours worked.
Closing date for applications is Sunday 1st December 2024
However, we reserve the right to close the vacancy early depending on the volume of applications received.
The Babraham Institute welcomes applications from all sections of society.
Informal enquiries can be addressed to laura@babraham.ac.uk. Further information on the post and benefits (including on-site accommodation) can be obtained by e-mailing HR@babraham.ac.uk.
