Children’s Radiology at the University Hospital Southampton (UHS) are delighted to be able to offer a exciting opportunity for a band 6 trainee Sonographer.
We are looking for a patient focused, enthusiastic and highly motivated Radiographer who is currently employed at UHS, to progress into this band 6 trainee Sonographer post. You will be expected to undertake clinical training lists with experienced Sonographers and Radiologists and complete a post graduate certificate (PgC) in General Medical Ultrasound at Masters level which is funded by UHS. You will be able to take part in multidisciplinary team meetings and department training opportunities throughout this secondment, as well as have access to simulation training resources at UHS including ScanTrainers and phantoms in our ultrasound simulation suite.
You will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, helping to deliver a high quality and safe patient focussed service, communicating effectively with patients. You will learn how to undertake and report general medical ultrasound examinations on adult and paediatric patients under the supervision of a qualified practitioner in line with departmental protocols and trust policies.
This secondment post is expected to begin in December 2024 / January 2025 and continue for approximately 18 months. Employment throughout, and after the training will be wholly dependent on successful completion of all clinical and academic components of the training.

Ultrasound training will be shared between the paediatric and maun ultrasound departments to maximise exposure to ultrasound.
The Main Ultrasound department at UHS provides general medical, gynaecology, small part, MSK, and neck ultrasound scans to adult patients across Southampton General Hospital (SGH) and Royal South Hants (RSH) hospital sites, with a total of 8 scan rooms using predominantly GE, as well as Philips ultrasound equipment. There are an additional 2 vascular scan rooms across SGH and 2 paediatric scans rooms within Children’s Radiology department at SGH.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to perform general medical ultrasound scans and write diagnostic reports to a safe and high standard, in line with department protocols and trust policies, under the supervision of an experienced ultrasound practitioner.
  • Complete a post graduate certificate (PgC) in General Medical Ultrasound.
  • Rotate through the main adult and paediatric ultrasound departments at SGH and RSH sites for clinical training lists and complete associated competencies.

WHAT EXPERIENCE/SKILLS ARE NEEDED:

  • Able to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound.
  • Relevant degree at 2:2 or equivalent (e.g. BSc in Radiography)
  • Professional Registration e.g. HCPC or NMC Registration
  • Observational experience within the sonography department and use of the scan trainer study is advised.
