Description:
Position: Training Centre Instructor
Location: Glasgow
Department: Seafarer Training
Reports To: Manager, Marine Assurance
Position Summary
- The key function of this role is the management and delivery of all training courses at the Seapeak Training Centre in Glasgow.
- The Training Centre Instructor provides technical expertise to Marine Assurance including advising on best practices, identifying, and writing seafarer competencies.
Major Responsibilities
- Provide instruction on mandatory and non-mandatory courses ranging from operational level up to management level for ships officers serving in (or intending to serve in) the company’s gas tankers using both classroom and simulator environments.
- Develop training programs as required by the Training Centre Manager to align with STCW, IMO model courses, industry guidelines and other similar instruments. This will include the development of new courses to accommodate the new technology on Seapeak’s new builds alongside the simulator software vendor, as required.
- Carry out student assessment within the courses in order to:
- Monitor student learning.
- Check the effectiveness of instruction.
- Verify competence being assessed for the current role or intended role.
- Assist in preparing and submitting course materials to accrediting authorities.
- Actively monitor course content to ensure that all courses remain aligned with the latest regulations and reflect the needs of the course delegates to support their professional needs and to improve overall quality.
- Working within the framework of Seapeak’s competency system to review existing competencies and rewrite as necessary.
- Participate in recruitment and promotion interviews.
- Assist the Training Centre Manager with the efficient day to day operation of the Training Centre/deputise for the Training Centre Manager during leave periods.
- Represent Seapeak at industry forums and participate in best practice groups.
- Attend the Seapeak Competency Management Committee meetings.
Requirements (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
- Class 1 Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2 Deck or Engine STCW III/2) and Tanker endorsement (Liquefied Gas).
- Holds a recognised competency assessor qualification in line with IMO Model 1.30.
- Have a good command of English language.
- Be prepared to gain instructor or teaching qualifications as required.
- Have significant experience at management level (Master, Chief Officer, or Chief Engineer) on board gas tankers, preferably including LNG.
Preferred
- Experience at management level during gas vessel docking/refit/repair periods or during building and/or commissioning.
- Hold a recognised maritime instructor qualification (e.g. Training the Trainer).
- Is a corporate member of a professional institution (for example the Nautical Institute, the Royal Institute of Navigation, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology).
- Has successfully completed a simulator-based management level course accredited as meeting the SIGTTO Suggested Competency Standard for Officers serving on LNG vessels.
- Previous experience in operation of bridge and cargo simulators.
