DESCRIPTION

Boulder County Public Works Department is seeking to hire a Transfer Station Clerk. This role will be at the Nederland Transfer Station and gets to know just about everyone in Nederland.
If you enjoy working outside and talking with people, this is the job for you! This is a physically-demanding role, which involves assisting Boulder County residents in disposing of garbage, sorting recycling, maintaining the in vessel compost unit, and driving the Nederland compost trailer. Clerical duties involve answering resident questions, collecting fees, making bank deposits, and organizing services with vendors.
The Nederland Transfer Station is a staffed facility that accepts bagged and loose garbage, as well as recycling and compost from households and small businesses.
This is a part time, benefited position, that will work 32 hours per week. Schedule to be determined, based on the busiest days and hours of operation. The two week shift schedule is still being finalized but will include every other weekend. This position will work out of 286 Ridge Road, Nederland, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime).

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two years of office experience in a related field. Additional related education may count towards required experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to drive a trailer
  • Experience operating a skid steer

  • Is personable and likes helping customers
  • Has a flexible schedule and is willing to work half-and/or-partial days
  • Has some knowledge of recycling and waste management practices possesses some computer and bookkeeping skills

  • Working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, and departmental policies and regulations
  • Knowledge of recycling and waste management practices
  • Skill in operating office equipment and personal computers to meet the demands of the position
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees and the public

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The lifting requirement is 50 pounds, and includes such things as shoveling snow, chipping ice, spreading sand onto ice, bending, twisting, climbing 5-10 stairs at a time, extreme heat and cold conditions, walking on uneven surfaces and on snow and ice.

**Vacation and Medical leave are based off of full time FTE accruals. Part-time FTE/term employees accrue leave based on the percentage of time they work.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the public in person and on the phone by answering questions, providing information regarding alternate recycling options, and referring individuals to appropriate staff or departments
  • Shovels snow, applies snow melt, and uses a snow blower, as needed
  • Opens and closes facility gates/buildings in a timely manner
  • Evaluates size of load (garbage bag, pickup truck, etc.)
  • Informs customers of fees associated with available services
  • Provides limited assistance to residents moving bags from vehicles to roll-off dumpsters
  • Ensures recyclables and waste are deposited in proper boxes, and are loaded evenly
  • Keeps yard clean of debris and litter
  • Monitors the amount of recyclables, waste, metals, and corrugated materials in roll-offs, compactors, and trailers; communicates with vendors to arrange pick-ups
  • Performs cash handling duties involving petty cash, collection of fees, issuing detailed receipts, balancing funds to receipts/customer records, and making bank deposits
  • Operating a computerized point of sale system for payments and daily reporting via computer programs Microsoft Excel and online systems
  • Maintains the in-vessel compost unit including the maintaining the right balance of moisture, food scraps, and wood chips, adding in material to the unit, and removing the finished compost out of the unit
  • Operates a skid steer for yard maintenance
  • Performs related work, as required
  • May be reassigned in emergency situations
