The Role
Operations Command are seeking to recruit a highly motivated Detective Sergeant to join the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) based at Burpham.
The SCIU investigate fatal, life threatening and life changing road traffic collisions across Surrey and Sussex and are part of the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) within the collaborated Surrey and Sussex Operations Command.
You will be responsible for supervising a team of Investigating Officers (IO’s) - comprising police officers and police.
As a Roads Policing Lead Investigator (RPLI), you will manage serious and complex investigations and provide advice and support to colleagues across the Force where Road Traffic incidents are concerned.
As well as RPU and other internal units, you will routinely communicate with external partners such as Traffic Management Officers, HM Coroners and Coroner’s Officers, as well as CPS local and complex case units.
You will report to the Detective Inspector and will work a shift pattern which includes late shifts and weekends.
There may be the requirement to cover out of hours as part of an on-call cadre.
You will be expected to attend the scene of incidents as required.
Key Responsibilities

Working alongside supervisory colleagues in both Surrey and Sussex, the post holder will be required to:

  • Effectively manage complex, policy and action driven investigations.
  • Comply with the Victim Code and Witness Charter.
  • Manage, develop and support the team to achieve Unit objectives.
  • Set clear direction for the team and ensure that all reasonable lines of enquiry are identified and pursued.
  • Liaise closely with Forensic Collision Investigators and Coroners Officers to ensure that they have the information they require to perform their respective roles.
  • Ensure that families and interested parties are kept informed of the progress of investigations via the Investigating Officer (IO) and / or Family Liaison Officer (FLO).

• Review case files to ensure data accuracy and compliance prior to submission to CPS or CTSU. • Attend post-mortem examinations and brief Forensic Pathologists.

  • Attend and give evidence at Magistrates, Crown and Coroners Courts as required.

Skills & Experience

This is an interesting and extremely rewarding role, but applicants should be aware that there is an increased exposure to trauma on a regular basis, and a requirement to deal with families and victims who are going through a life changing event.

  • You should have a high degree of resilience.
  • At this time we are seeking applicants who are PIP 2 accredited.
  • The complex nature of our investigations requires a high degree of attention to detail.
  • You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • You must have high levels of self-motivation and the ability to manage a workload with minimal supervision.
  • There will sometimes be a requirement to amend your working hours depending on operational requirements.
  • You must have the ability to work well in a team environment, considering and valuing the contributions of other team members.
  • You must have good general IT skills and a knowledge of police systems such as NICHE and Storm are essential.
  • A sound knowledge of managing investigations, legislation and guidance, particularly with regard to the CPIA and Authorised Professional Practice.
  • A working knowledge of Road Traffic legislation is desirable.
  • Hold a current JRFT pass due to the requirement to attend scenes.
  • You must hold a full driving licence for cars and hold at least a valid BDA driving permit.
