Job Title Industrial Placement Submarines Telecoms & Communications Engineer
Location Barrow (Cumbria)
Start Date 23rd June 2025
BAE Systems do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected on our Industrial Placement Programme you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager.

SKILLS

As a minimum requirement you’ll need to be on track to obtain, a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering biased towards Radio or Network design or, Physics with a strong bias towards Radio Frequency or Fibre Optic Engineering.
To be considered for this role you must be returning to university to complete your degree.

Responsibilities:

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

As an Undergraduate Telecoms and Communications Engineer, you will be part of our team developing solutions to complex technical questions and in-service upgrades for Submarine platforms within the Engineering Project Group.
You will be working across the breadth of the engineering design lifecycle to support the current projects, such as our Dreadnought class and Astute class submarines and work on the future bidding activity of the department. You will be assisting in providing professional engineering services to meet the future operational needs of naval platforms, the Submarine business and customer programmes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • You will play a pivotal part in developing integrated engineering solutions focused on the Internal Communications Systems of our current and future classes of Submarine.
  • From requirements and architecture development to equipment selection, integration, test and through life support you will be embedded amongst experts in this broad field.
  • Exciting challenges for those with a passion for industrial communications networks including but not limited to radio systems, IP based devices, fibre optics as well as those interested in audio/visual systems from broadcast speakers and VOIP to distributed media systems.
  • Contributing to high integrity designs with your base knowledge of electrical principals, network architecture and protocols, radio theory and knowledge of A/C systems.
  • Calculations to considered reports on component selection to designs for Human Machine Interfaces and analysis of impacts on Communications systems.
