Description:
We are looking for a positive and enthusiastic senior nurse, with a strong work ethic, excellent leadership skills and a solid clinical background in Interventional Radiology, to lead our well-established team within Interventional Theatres.
The successful post holder will support the ongoing development of the IR service. Showing a knowledge and interest in quality improvement and governance, demonstrating an innovative and dynamic approach to ensuring the delivery of high-quality, holistic, patient care in a challenging and fast paced environment. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential.
This role will involve direct management responsibilities including supporting with workforce and HR issues, staff rostering, annual leave, sickness absence, training and development.
Overseeing the coordination of the IR department to provide care and treatment to interventional radiology patients. Also, supporting junior staff with the daily operation of the department and to manage and organise work as required.
The Unit co-ordinator manager will work closely with all modality deputy leads, providing support and guidance to help them to deliver their imaging service both effectively and efficiently.

The post holder will have management responsibility for the unit over the 24hr period, ensuring a high standard of nursing care.
Key responsibilities will include the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, effective leadership and staff management/development
The post holder will always work within the NMC/HPC Code of Professional Conduct.
To manage and participate in nursing on call service for interventional emergencies
To work in collaboration with the Radiographic Lead to manage capacity and demand of activity in Interventional Theatres.
Ensure effective and efficient use of the directorates resources.
To set, monitor and maintain standards of high quality care within the Radiology Department
Take an active lead in policy development for the directorate.
Actively promote good communication throughout the directorate.
Provide an environment for effective training and development of all staff.
Internal rotation is in practice through interventional theatres, anaesthetic, scrub and recovery to allow personal development and the smooth delivery of service.
It is recognised that on agreement at formal appraisal on annual basis there may be a decision to concentrate on certain aspects of this job description.
Key responsibilities
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical/Technical/Clerical
- Co-ordination of the unit on a day to day basis including planning, allocation and evaluation of work carried out by teams or individuals and self.
- Provide specialist knowledge to all Nursing staff within the Department
- Will promote a critical, analytical approach to the delivery of nursing care ensuring that the departmental environment is responsive to current issues.
- Ensure that all existing procedures and protocols relating to the care of patients are reviewed and updated as required.
- Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
- Explore and undertake expanded practice to optimise patient care as required within the specialist areas, in accordance with Trust policies.
- Develop a mechanism for setting goals and bench marking standards of care.
- Develop tools to improve the quality of the service provided within the Department to include clinical audit.
- Plan and implement a programme for clinical supervision for all staff working in the Department.
- Maintain personal specialist skills in the clinical area, and provide professional advice regarding the development and provision of high quality patient care.
- Ensure effective communication with all groups of staff both within the directorate and between other departments.
- Maintain personal skills in the clinical area and function as a role model. Demonstrate excellence in specialist knowledge and practice.
Clinical Governance
- Responds within appropriate timeframes to patient complaints and concerns and ensure outcomes and action plans are implemented and monitored.
- Develop and implement risk management and effectiveness programmes for all staff in the Unit.
- Deal with by investigating and reporting incidents/complaints involving staff, patients, and visitors, at unit level.
- Ensure compliance with the requirements of the HASAW Act and COSHH, and participation of all staff in mandatory training programmes.
- Comply at all times with regulations issued by the Trust, especially those governing HASAW and ensure that any defects that may affect safety at work are brought to the attention of the Directorate Manager.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Exercise strong and effective leadership acting as an exemplary role model for the Nursing team.
- Maintain adequate staff cover and skill mix in the Department through effective use of staffing rotas.
- Ensure staff compliance with mandatory training and maintain current records.
- Ensure effective communication with patients and their carers.
- Liaise with nursing, medical and allied health professional colleagues to ensure that allfacets of the patients` care are covered.
- Lead the Nursing team meeting to ensure appropriate information is communicated to all team members.
- In collaboration with the DM, implement the Trust grievance/disciplinary policy with the aim of ensuring early identification of performance issues.
- Support the implementation of the Trusts Human Resources Strategy including the principles of Improving Working Lives and Investors in People.
- Monitor performance of staff ensuring that learning needs are identified through personal development plans, appraisal systems and supervised practice.
- Contribute to planning, monitoring and control of resources.
- Develop competency based training packages for use within the department; inclusive of preceptorship, pre and post registration nurses.
- In conjunction with the directorate management team, take an active role in developing further the service provided in the Department.
- Ensure effective planning and resourcing of equipment for planned activity.
- Take an active role in the development of departmental and Trust policies, protocols, and guidelines.
- Participate in the selection, interviewing and monitoring of all new staff.
- Manage the sickness, absence and annual leave for all staff
- Attend and actively contribute in Interventional and directorate meetings. Liaise effectively with end users to provide a cost-effective service.
- Oversee the deployment of staff across the Department to meet the needs of the service, ensuring the appropriate skill mix at all times
Education and Training
- Ensure appropriate allocation of study time for professional development and staff compliance with Trusts study leave policy.
- Collaborate with the clinical practice facilitators and Institutes of Higher Education to develop and promote an effective and responsive clinical learning environment.
- Ensure that nursing care is wherever possible is evidence based. Encourage and initiate nursing audit and research, assisting with the implementation of findings where appropriate.
- Promote an environment conducive to learning.
- Ensure that procedures for extending the role of the practitioner are implemented and received regularly.
- IT skills: All staff are expected to have or to gain a minimum of basic level IT skills to enable them to use the Trust IT systems to support Trust services and needs.
- Participate in and provide relevant research and contribute to the application and evaluation of current research into care.
- Develop a system for the unit that assures that all staff are appraised each year. In conjunction with this process, develop an education and training programme for the Unit that meets the needs of the department and the training needs of the individual.
