Responsible for providing tax support to business segments; the identification and reporting of imperative tax issues, such as tax savings and tax controversy mitigation; and implementation of federal and state tax legislation. Support the preparation of tax structuring, research models, tax planning and analyses of complex tax positions and transactions for the purpose of presenting to senior leaders. Support projects pursuing federal, state and local tax credits and incentives. Drive a deep understanding of the financial outcomes to minimize HCSC’s tax liability.

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Accounting. Other Bachelor’s Degrees may be considered.
  • 5 years of experience in federal and/or state tax planning or compliance.
  • Experience in researching complex tax issues and laws employing commonly accepted tax research methodologies, resources, and architecture.
  • Advanced PC proficiency to include Excel, Access or similar. Proficiency in designing reports.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills to prepare effective documentation, facilitate training and development, and participate in presentations.
  • Experience working cross-functionally within all levels of the organization, leading projects and in problem resolution.
  • Negotiation and influencing skills

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Experience in M&A taxation and/or Tax credits and incentives
  • Advanced degree in taxation or law and/or professional certification (ie. MST, CPA)
  • Knowledge of the health insurance industry and its products
  • Experience with insurance taxation issues and ACA
  • Access, Tableau, SQL, Visual Basic, Alteryx or other programming skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of insurance tax industry concepts, including an understanding of the Company’s specific practices, procedures, systems and applications.
  • Experience in developing, maintaining and leveraging collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders and business leaders, to accept recommendations, cooperate or change their behavior, facilitating the accomplishment of business goals

Responsibilities:

  • Performs tax analyses to minimize HCSC and subsidiary tax liability. Defines how requirements will be supported and identifies tax limitations, solutions and resources.
  • May contribute to tax compliance on tax issues resulting from the Affordable Care Act, by performing tax analysis, audit support, and tax return filings.
  • Leads merger and acquisition, corporate investments, and joint venture tax compliance and related stock basis analyses.
  • Lead consultation to Corporate Leadership on a diverse array of issues such as the tax implications in due diligence on potential mergers and acquisitions, entity disposition analysis, and other miscellaneous tax issues.
  • May contribute to efforts to identify and obtain federal, state and local tax credits and incentives related to job creation and/or retention.
  • Analyzes complex tax problems and issues, using data from internal and external sources, to provide expert insight and analysis to decision-makers. Addresses difficult questions to overcome internal resistance and to secure support.
  • Advises business by providing tax-based strategic direction, including short and long-range financial projections, to identify and address tax saving issues and opportunities.
  • Presents to Tax Management a picture of the current tax law environment through daily study of current developments in tax law legislation, tax court decisions, and tax trends in the health insurance industry to address their benefits or potential tax liability exposure to HCSC. Designs and develops models, studies and databases to support tax analyses of financial outcomes for a Line of Business, subsidiary, or other tax sensitive structuring.
  • Support and defend HCSC and Subsidiaries tax positions claimed on federal and state income tax returns, state sales and use tax returns, and state premium tax returns under audit examination.
  • Supports Tax Planning department projects by creating databases, preparation and review of documents, per departmental needs. Facilitates project management and leads the work of others.
  • Provide tax support for the HCSC product portfolio, including consumer driven health plans involving health reimbursement arrangements and health savings accounts.
