POSITION SUMMARY
The Unit Secretary is responsible for secretarial duties necessary for smooth running or the unit. Collaborate to provide optimal plan of care based on age/diagnosis specific needs.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
Experience: One year experience in hospital work or general secretarial work preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Responsibilities:
- Handles clerical duties on nursing unit, including answering telephone, relaying messages, keeping records, directing visitors, distributing mail, and transcribing physicians’ orders
- Ensures documentation and problem solving begins immediately when breakdown in patient safety occurs.
- Demonstrates Memorial’s expectations for customer service.
- Keeps RN and Shift Coordinator informed of pertinent information in a timely manner.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Demonstrates advocacy for patient/family.
- Processes Physician/Practitioner orders in an accurate and timely fashion.
- Collaborates with all staff in the transfer/discharge of patients.
- Demonstrates inter/intradepartmental teamwork.
- Accurately monitors unit records (staffing records, kardex, refrigerator/crash cart check lists etc.) as assigned.
- Demonstrates flexibility in the unit secretary role.
- Knows roles and responsibilities during all Emergency Codes and Red Rules.
