Description:

An exciting development opportunity has arisen for a Urology Nurse Practitioner to join our vibrant and hard-working team at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
We are looking for an enthusiastic healthcare professional, with substantial experience in Urology or Outpatients’ Nursing to join our dedicated Urology Nursing and Medical Team.
The successful candidate is expected to be highly motivated, dedicated with a passion for excellence in patient care, along with excellent communication organisational skills.
We are a busy department providing a variety of Rapid Access Clinics, many of which are nurse led. We also provide Urology Outpatients services Monday to Friday, across 3 sites – Whiston Hospital, St Helens Hospital and Newton Community Hospital.
An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for Adults is required for this post.

To support the urology lead nurse manager and existing team in providing nurse-led urology diagnostic and treatment services to patients referred to the department by their general practitioner or consultants and on-going care / treatment whilst under the departments responsibility.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity for learning new skills along with supporting our team of highly skilled, and well established Nurse Practitioners, Doctors and Consultants.

Responsibilities:

KEY DUTIES

Abide by the legal requirements and statutory rules relating to practice. Promote and maintain standards of professional practice in accordance with NMC guidelines The post holder will support the team to develop a urological service that will strengthen the interface between primary and secondary care

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Support the senior urology nurse practitioner to provide a Nurse-led rapid access service which involves:
Interviewing patients to obtain a history of presenting symptoms
Give appropriate advice.
Counsel and obtain written and verbal informed consent for invasive and non-invasive investigations.
Ordering appropriate investigations and interpreting results.
Performing a physical examination ie. abdominal palpation, genital examination and digital rectal examination of prostate gland. Provide appropriate management of results following the physical examination.
Planning and evaluating complex systems of investigations and care.
Providing accurate documentation.
Advising General Practitioners on the urological management of their patients.
Taking a patient’s medical/surgical history
Performing clinical examination of the abdomen and prostate
Interpretation of flow studies and post void residuals
Plan/book and organise for further radiological examinations
Interpretation of blood results
Diagnosis
Planning and evaluating complex systems of investigations and care.
Providing accurate documentation.
Providing information and giving explanations
Advising General Practitioners on the urological management of their patients
Under the guidance of the senior urology nurse practitioner will perform cancer check cystoscopies and provide a written record of each examination.
Under the guidance of the senior urology nurse practitioner will perform diagnostic cystoscopies and provide a comprehensive written report of each examination.
To adhere to Trust protocols for each examination.
Administer antibiotics if indicated according to Trust antibiotic policy.
Work autonomously to provide a nurse-led service for patients referred with the impotence by their General Practitioners, or by Consultant Urologists.
Interviewing patients to obtain a history of presenting symptoms.
Counsel and obtain verbal informed consent for examination and administering treatment.
Perform physical examination of patient’s genital area and abdomen.
Providing information and giving explanations.
Accurately interpreting the results of investigations.
Organise and carry out any further investigations.
Diagnosis.
Planning management of care.
Advising and providing a written report to General Practitioner and Urologists in the management of their patients.
Assisting or providing assistance with bladder instillations, Flow studies, lithotripsy, urodynamics, teaching of intermittent self-catheterisation/dilatation, pre and post op bladder botox clinics.
Ensure that patients are effectively informed about all management options, so that they are able to give informed consent to procedures and treatment options.
Assist in the maintenance of supplies of medical and non-medical sundries to minimise waste whilst ensuring the most cost effective products are utilised
Flexibly respond to the demands of the environment including unpredictable work patterns, deadlines and frequent interruptions.
Provide specialised advice in relation to the management and education of patients/clients as appropriate.
Ensure that the clients’ privacy and dignity is maintained at all times.
Record personally generated clinical observations and maintains a high standard of record keeping.
Take lead responsibilities within care teams using negotiating, motivating and persuasive communication skills to overcome barriers in co-operation.
Demonstrate empathy with clients’ and their families, ensuring that effective communication is achieved particularly where poor understanding exists.
Supervision of junior staff members, identifying any training and development needs.
Maintain professional registration with the NMC and fulfil PREP requirements.
Be aware of and practice professionally in accordance with NMC guidelines and Code of Practice, Code of Professional Conduct, Guidelines for Records and Record Keeping and Guidelines for Administration of Medicines.
Adhere to unit, Trust, regional and national clinical policies and protocols as appropriate.
Take full accountability for their own actions and take responsibility for managing own workload unsupervised, using appropriate referrals to medical and management personnel as appropriate.
Present an appearance that promotes a positive profile of the urological service and the Trust, in line with the Trust uniform policy.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

To ensure any patient records are complete and updated and ready for scanning.

TEACHING AND TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

To ensure that high standards of training are maintained for junior staff and students.
To attend seminars and conferences as service allows
