Job Description

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Vascular Access Team (VAT) based at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU)
The post holder will be working within a team of specialist nurses. The role will be varied and the successful candidate will care for both inpatients and outpatients who require the insertion and management of invasive devices such as PICC lines, Midlines and Cannulas. You will also be expected to provide expert advice on the care and maintenance of all PVCs and central lines. There will be an element of ward-based auditing, education and support across the whole organisation which means you will be encountering a variety of different specialities, staff members and patients. So, the successful candidate should have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work autonomously but also as part of the team which will include the VAT as well as those across the wider Trust.

Although this role covers the whole Trust you will be part of the Surgery and Outpatients Division, and therefore will also be able to draw on the wider team for advice and guidance as well as access any in house training that may support your development.

JOB SUMMARY

  • Undertake training to become a specialist in vascular access and attend annual updates to ensure the vascular access service provides evidence-based care.
  • Attain level 4 competency in the placement of intravenous devices, such as PICC and midlines.
  • Attain level 4 competence in Phlebotomy, Cannulation and IV therapy.
  • Provide expert advice, education and support to patients, their carers and other professionals.
  • Provide support and expertise to junior staff.
  • Contribute towards the patient safety agenda by auditing vascular access practice and devices in clinical areas to identify educational and training needs thus reducing the risk of blood stream infections.
  • Audit the vascular access service to drive service improvements.
  • Accept referrals and refer patients to other health care professionals as required in the hospital and/or in the community.
  • To be responsible for the prioritising and allocating referrals, clinically assessing and consenting patients and undertaking clinical sessions.
  • Lead and co-ordinate the service alongside the Vascular access lead nurse.
  • Co-ordinate and implement an overall strategy of evidence based PICC line placement and Audits relevant to placement and vascular care.
  • Through effective leadership ensure the vascular access team deliver a safe, robust, effective, responsive, caring and well-led service where compassion is embedded, and a positive patient experience is achieved.
  • Provide strong professional clinical and managerial leadership and act as a professional role model.

    Qualifications

Essential

  • Current RN with current NMC registration
  • BSc Degree Level Qualification
  • Teaching Qualification or experience

Desirable

  • Evidence of change management with relevant management/leadership course

EXPERIENCE

  • Clinical supervision – where applicable monthly attendance
