Description:
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Supervisor of the Agriculture, Environment and Parks, the MD of Bighorn Vegetation Management Technician is responsible for assisting in the controlling of invasive vegetation throughout the MD of Bighorn. This position may also provide support to other MD related functions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma supplemented by current enrollment of post-secondary education or related technical diploma or equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of the Weed Control Act and herbicide application is preferred but not required, we’ll provide all necessary training for this position.
- Willingness to become trained as an Alberta Pesticide Authorized Assistant for the purpose of applying herbicides.
- Physically able to perform medium lifting, up to 50lbs, be on your feet outside for multiple hours per day, perform labour tasks outdoors for extended periods of time, and wear a backpack sprayer up to 30lbs.
- Experience with operating and maintaining tools, small equipment such as quads, roadside sprayers, and small machinery.
- Read maps and directions to understand where you are in the landscape without cell coverage.
- Work outside in varying weather conditions.
- Comfortable with working alone and able to work effectively with others.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Effective and courteous communicator with supervisor, co-workers, and members of the public.
- Confident and approachable with excellent customer service skills.
- Positive attitude and able to demonstrate initiative.
- Valid class 5 driver’s license, acceptable driving record and successful criminal record check.

Responsibilities:
- Identify, control and manage regulated invasive plant species listed under the Alberta Weed Control Act as well as other vegetation.
- Mixing and loading of herbicides, in equipment such as roadside sprayers, backpack sprayers, quad sprayer and hose reel sprayers, to be applied on roadsides and municipal owned property.
- Perform vegetation management through means of herbicide application, manual (hand pulling) and mechanical (mowing or cutting) operations.
- Operation of backpack sprayer, truck mounted spray units and possibly a quad sprayer.
- Carry out inspections on private, municipal and provincially owned properties.
- Interact with property owners and provide information and advice on vegetation management.
- Maintain weed inspection and herbicide application records.
- Consult and provide recommendations to residents regarding weed management issues.
- Maintain all related equipment and perform minor repairs.
- Assist with pest inspections when requested.
- Regular cleaning of vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain detailed inspection records and maintenance log reports.
- Participating in safety meetings and training as part of the MD’s Health and Safety program.
- Other duties as determined by the Supervisor.
