Description:
Ka Ni Kanichihk Inc. is a nonprofit, community based; Indigenous-led human services organization that provides a range of Indigenous identified programs and services that focus on the wholeness, wellness and that builds on the strengths and resilience of Indigenous People.
Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the Direct Care Worker provides one-to-one case management services to participants of Velma’s House 24/7 Safe Space, while also acting as a support worker to participants who are accessing the space on a drop in basis.
The safe space is a low barrier drop-in space for all women, including members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, who are unsheltered and experiencing sexual exploitation or violence. The staff team operates with compassion, from a trauma-informed and harm-reduction lens, respecting participants’ choices and autonomy. A wide variety of services are provided, from basic needs and everyday items, to cultural programming and ongoing support.
The Direct Care Worker role combines the responsibilities of Support/Outreach staff, with more intensive, one to Done support for participants who request it. More specifically, the Direct Care Worker works with the staff team to ensure the drop in runs effectively; preparing and serving meals, cleaning, providing participants with the items they need for the day, while setting aside blocks of time to work with participants on their goals, connect to needed resources, book appointments and follow up. This may be done via appointments or drop in, depending on the needs of the individual. The Direct Care Worker works closely with EIA, Manitoba Housing, Justice, community resources and other systems to ensure the participant can overcome barriers and achieve their goals.
