Description:

The East Village Animal Hospital, EVAH-London, is a non profit veterinary hospital serving low income pet owners and shelter/rescue animals in high volume, fast paced, surgical and medical veterinary clinic. We have been beyond fortunate since EVAH-London opened many years ago to have had amazing management, but our wonderful veterinary hospital manager is retiring this spring! For the first time ever, we are opening up an ad to receive cover letters and resumes to those excited for the opportunity to become our London team and veterinary clinic manager.
Job Summary: Implementing & maintaining the EVAH non profit community care veterinary mission in the capacity of the Veterinary Hospital Manager, responsible for the daily decisions & functions of the animal hospital with regards to: non profit veterinary service schedules and program offerings, revenue review and deposits, inventory supervision, staff scheduling & supervision, human relations in conjunction with the Executive Director as needed, client relations, overseeing all clinic activities in general.
Public relations and staff safety fall under the EVAH Hospital Manager’s daily tasks. Hospital Managers create and/or review notes, reports, recommendations and requests with the Executive Director, Chief Financial Officer and Medical Director to analyze the effectiveness of various procedures, programs & employees. EVAH’s Hospital Managers work together to improve the efficiency of care, oversee and ensure best practices as per EVAH’s Medical Director are implemented and adhered to by support staff, keep up-to-date on College of Veterinarians regulations and requirements. Key elements for this position, and guiding principles for all EVAH staff focus on supporting EVAH’s mission of delivering accessible veterinary services in keeping with the 2025 AAHA’s Community Care Guidelines:

The AAHA Community Care Guidelines helps practices expand their scope of care so they’re not left with the painful decision to turn a patient away or have the client decline care for their pet. Community care is a creative way of thinking about health care access that mobilizes all available resources in a community. It is a collaborative, noncompetitive care model that places the family (people and pets) at its center. Community care uses all the tools and resources available to veterinary practices to increase access to care, including:

  • Using a spectrum of care approach
  • Recognizing and mitigating barriers to care
  • Adopting a family-centered approach to practice, including a commitment to keep pets with their families whenever possible
  • Collaborating with nonprofit practices like shelters, spay and neuter practices, animal welfare organizations, and community practices
  • Redefining what “gold standard” practice means to bring care options to more pets and families

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Hospital Managers need to understand non-profit veterinary clinic goals/the EVAH mission as well as the compassion based economics behind these decisions in order to implement and meet those goals. Strict adherence to confidentiality with regards to medical records and managerial conversations and decisions. Knowledge of current labour relations (provincial and federal standards) and general comprehension of human resources. Proven sustainable-team management skills, and strong verbal and written communications skills are a necessity. Hospital managers must also be able to work well with a variety of professionals, including veterinarians, as well as be able to communicate positively & productively with a variety of clientele & manage client concerns. Hospital Managers will demonstrate excellent problem solving to find creative, EVAH-mission minded, solutions for staffing, team building/sustaining, scheduling, equipment, and client problems.

CLIENT EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

a) Knowledge of current veterinary medical concepts including but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks, and common drugs; diets utilized in veterinary medicine.
b) Must also be able to communicate veterinary concepts to owners and be able to repeat information relayed by a veterinarian.
c) Confidence relaying and discussing financial information with clients and staff.
d) Will be asked to communicate with the public ; staff on a daily basis in a professional manner.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

a. Technical proficiency with PC platforms, as well as Microsoft Office ; Microsoft Excel (or software version EVAH provides).b. Must be able to answer and respond to multiple phone lines, while assisting clients & staff in-clinic, while utilizing the computer.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Three or more years experience management, team lea, or assistant management experience in a veterinary clinic, administration management, non profit organization and/or animal shelter or control facility. Candidate should be highly motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a generally solution focused professional attitude with the ability to train, coach, guide, and hold staff accountable for all support team duties.
