Veterinary Laboratory Assistant

Due to a period of continued growth and expansion, the diagnostic laboratory at Dick White Referrals has an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Laboratory Assistant to join the team.
The successful candidate will work alongside receptionists, laboratory scientists and pathologists to assist with the daily running of the laboratory; together, providing a comprehensive, reliable and efficient diagnostic service to both the DWR hospital and surrounding local veterinary practices.
This opportunity would be well suited to you if you have previous experience as a Veterinary Lab Assistant (VLA), a Medical Lab Assistant (MLA) or experience working within specimen reception.
We are offering a 6-month fixed term contract, with the potential to go permanent at the end of the contract. It’s a full-time position (40-hour week) working 8-hour shifts between the hours of 06:00 and 18:00, Tuesday to Saturday.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

A Level qualification or above within a science field (preferably biology).
Proven laboratory experience ideally within a veterinary or clinical setting.
Attention to detail and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Organised with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Basic math, interpretive and analytical skills.
Personal computer skills, strong typing ability, and proficient in Microsoft Office.
Strong data processing skills.

Responsibilities:

Sample reception: open and receive samples, accurately record details on submission form, sort samples into appropriate sections and enter details onto LIMS system.
Handle and prepare diagnostic samples for testing, including preparation and staining of cytology slides and blood films and scanning cytology and histology slides.
Preparing samples for shipment to external laboratories
Stock control: Maintaining stock levels, placing orders, receiving laboratory deliveries and stock rotation of new supplies.
Maintain a tidy and clean working environment including disposal of laboratory waste.
Comply with laboratory health and safety procedures.
