Description:

In support of our client, Maderra Personnel is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Vice President of Engineering in Corner Brook, NL.
Located in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Maderra Engineering Inc. provides project management, project services, engineering, technical and personnel services to the Energy, Resource, and Commercial sectors. REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Professional certifications (e.g., PMP, AACE Certified Estimator) are highly desirable.
  • At least 10-15 years of experience in civil engineering and cost estimation, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership or executive role.
  • Extensive experience in managing Class Two estimating processes for large-scale civil infrastructure projects.
  • Proven track record of overseeing multi-disciplinary teams and delivering complex projects on time and within budget.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering design and construction processes.
  • Expertise in cost estimation software and tools (e.g., ProEst, RSMeans, WinEst).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Strong knowledge of project risk management, budgeting, and financial controls.
  • Ability to foster innovation and implement process improvements.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to align operational goals with broader business objectives.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to foresee potential issues and address them proactively.
  • Ability to manage multiple high-priority tasks and lead diverse teams effectively.
  • Highly analytical, with attention to detail and a deep understanding of cost drivers within the civil engineering space.
  • This is a senior-level position within a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Occasional travel may be required for site visits, client meetings, or project oversight.

Responsibilities:

The Vice President of Engineering is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing and managing all operational aspects related to civil engineering. This role combines technical expertise in civil engineering with strategic leadership skills, ensuring that cost estimates are accurate, timely, and aligned with organizational goals. The VP will work closely with internal teams, clients, contractors, and project managers to deliver comprehensive, high-quality, and cost-effective solutions for major civil infrastructure projects. Leadership & Strategy:

  • Lead and manage the Estimate Team, driving performance and ensuring team alignment with corporate goals.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness within the Construction Estimate process.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in estimating, providing guidance and mentorship to the team.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to establish department priorities and goals, aligning them with company objectives.

Client Relations & Stakeholder Communication:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors.
  • Communicate estimate outcomes, challenges, and strategies effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide executive-level reporting on all activities and project status.

Cost Estimation:

  • Oversee the preparation of the Construction Estimate for EVREC (Botwood Wind to Hydrogen Project) ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Lead the development of cost models, bid analyses, and scope breakdowns to provide detailed project estimates.
  • Ensure all estimates reflect current market conditions, including labor, material costs, and external factors impacting project budgets.
  • Review and approve all cost estimates before submission, verifying the alignment with project scope and client expectations.

Project Oversight & Coordination:

  • Provide operational oversight for the Construction Estimate and the required Team ensuring timelines are adhered to.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and clients to understand project specifications and deliver cost-effective solutions.
  • Monitor project performance and addressing any team related discrepancies or issues.

Process Improvement & Innovation:

  • Continuously evaluate and oversee cost estimation processes completed by the Estimation Team and review methodologies to increase accuracy and efficiency.
  • Implement best practices and industry standards in estimating and project management.
  • Develop and foster relationships with external stakeholders (contractors, suppliers, regulatory bodies) to gather data and insights to improve estimating practices.

Risk Management & Compliance:

  • Identify potential risks to project cost and timeline and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Ensure estimates comply with industry standards, legal regulations, and internal policies.
  • Oversee the preparation of risk assessments and the inclusion of contingency plans within cost estimates.
  • Develop a strong understanding of the safe work practices and polices implemented by the Group and adhere to them under all circumstances.

Team Development & Management:

  • Build a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational excellence within the team.
  • Manage staƯing needs by delegating to the Human Resources Department. Be diligent in resource allocation, and workload distribution to optimize team performance.
