Job Overview
The Vice President of Health Sciences Strategic Management and Operations (VPSMO) reports to the Executive Vice President of Health Sciences (EVP-HS) and is responsible for supporting him/her in connecting all of the major strategic, clinical, academic, research and enterprise processes across the University and with the community.
This position works closely with the EVP-HS to collaborate with each of the university’s academic campuses and central departments, fostering alignment between the priorities of GUMC and the University by ensuring a cohesive connection between resources, strategy, and performance. The VPSMO coordinates across the University and within the EVP-HS leadership team to ensure effective operations and manages essential activities and strategic initiatives within the Health Sciences.
The VPSMO will work with the Chief of Staff to enable the EVP-HS to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and to respond quickly to changing priorities, all keys to the success of the EVP-HS. The VPSMO works on behalf and at the direction of the EVP-HS interacting regularly with key university stakeholders and board members, at times, providing guidance and counsel on EVP-HS related matters and engaging with the Health Science Leadership team.
The VPSMO serves as a senior leader responsible for directing a team of professionals responsible for the day-to-day smooth operations of the Health Sciences enterprise, and tracking, management and implementation of the Health Sciences Strategic Plan goals and other Health Science initiatives. The VPSMO will close the gap between strategy formulation and strategy execution, ensuring the implementation and execution of goals is accomplished in an integrated fashion across the Health Sciences Enterprise. This will require comprehensive and frequent communication of the goals and strategic objectives of the overarching plan, ensuring that enterprise level plans are translated into the plans of the various units and departments, executing strategic initiatives to deliver the over-all visions, missions and goals of Health Sciences, and inspire and motivate employee’s passion to embrace the strategic objectives. The VPSMO and her/his team, will also ensure that individual units/offices/depts strategic goals align not only with Health Sciences Strategic goals and objectives, but align with the University’s overall goals and missions. The VPSMO will work closely with other health system partners, industry leaders, community and government leaders, and other partners to ensure success, reduce expenses, and increase the return on investments.
The position has direct oversight of several operational areas within and across GUMC which include but are not limited to: GUMC Facilities; Office of Operations and Planning; Medical Center Capital Planning; GUMC Shared Resources, Business Administrator Clinical Trials Office; School of Medicine Technical and Educational Support Services (TESS), Medical Center Central Temporary Pool; and GUMC Professional Development Services. This position will also work closely with the Vice President for Biomedical Graduate Education and Research and the Main Campus Vice Provost for Research in collaborative oversight and development of the Joint Office of Research and Administration, and the Clinical Research Operations Office (CROO).
The VPSMO will work with the Chief of Staff in the planning, development and finalization of all materials for the Board of Directors meetings; develop and manage agendas for leadership meetings; follow up on action items; and drive for decisions when appropriate to ensure the EVP-HS strategy advances in a timely and collaborative manner.
The VPSMO ensures communication and messaging is streamlined across functional areas within Health Sciences, and more broadly across the University. The VPSMO leads the preparation of materials for Board presentations; represents the EVP-HS on committees and working groups, as assigned, to internal and external stakeholders. Works with EVP-HS leadership to manage development of Health Sciences staff, ensuring continuous building of capabilities and skills.
Work Interactions
The VPSMO is a member of the EVP-HS leadership team and serves as an advisor and liaison to the EVP-HS. The VPSMO reports directly to the EVP-HS. The VPSMO serves as a key advisor to the EVP-HS on matters of strategy, operations and other significant project issues. This position supports the day-to-day management of the Office of the Health Sciences in partnership with the Chief of Staff, interacting with leadership and staff of all functional areas within the Health Sciences.
Additionally, this position provides operational oversight and assessment of space allocation for the GUMC campus, in collaboration with the Vice President for Faculty and Academic Affairs regarding faculty needs. This includes ongoing review of GUMC campus wide resources in the context of allocation of physical resources, equipment and space utilization in order to fully maximize operations and makes data-driven recommendations to the EVP. The VPSMO also communicates externally with campus leaders including but not limited to the Office of the COO (and all of its sub-units including Planning and Facilities Management, HR, UIS, Auxiliary Business Services, etc.), the Office of General Counsel, all academic campuses and their Schools, Research, Advancement, Athletics, and the Board of Directors.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- 10 years of experience in a complex environment is required.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and strong managerial ability.
- Ability to keep sensitive information confidential.
- Ability to interact and influence at the most senior levels of an organization and to work collaboratively across functions, levels and departments toward shared objectives.
- Strong writing and communication skills, including comfort with public presentations to a wide range of audiences. Ability to research a diverse array of topics and distill the key messaging for the EVP-HS.
- Strong data management skills, with the ability to interpret and analyze complex data.
- Ability to work cooperatively and strategically in a team environment with all levels of professional, technical and administrative staff and to integrate resources on a timely and organized basis.
- Sound management skills, ability to think strategically while balancing several complex agendas.
- Established skills in planning and managing multiple, diverse and organizational needs.
- Strong focus on execution of deliverables, while preserving relationships and positive regard.
- Prior experience as a COS and AVP of Strategic Management strongly preferred.
- Prior experience in Higher Education is preferred.
