Description:

The Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center (NVDC) is a tier 1 USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) veterinary diagnostic laboratory fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. The NVDC employs state-of-the-art testing procedures to provide disease surveillance and diagnostic services to veterinarians, livestock producers, pet owners and researchers.

AS THE VIROLOGY RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST II, YOU WILL:

  • Prepare samples and conduct virology, serology, and molecular diagnostic testing.
  • Determine, prepare, and analyze results for serology, virology and rabies testing and ensure compliance with federal programs.
  • Design, validate, and implement new diagnostic testing, as needed.
  • Review results in the Vetview system and prepare reports for veterinarians, pathologists and other clientele, including charting and monitoring data for the lab’s quality control systems.
  • Write, review, and revise standard operating procedures for final approval by the lab manager and faculty.Be responsible for quality control of assays and continual improvement of documents and procedures that are part of the quality control and management systems.

  • Following hire, the incumbent will need to obtain and maintain compliance with all applicable requirements for working with pathogens including proficiency testing and accreditation requirements from a variety of regulatory bodies. This position is responsible for following all applicable safety and infection control procedures.
    Irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays may occasionally be required in situations of outbreak response and to ensure required turnaround times. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as a Research Technologist II.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related field plus three (3) years’ laboratory experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in biological sciences or related field plus one (1) year laboratory experience. Additional relevant education or training may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Precision, accuracy, attention to detail, and technical knowledge and ability are necessary.
  • Experience with basic and skilled lab procedures.
  • Basic data collection, analysis, and SOP writing skills necessary. Knowledge of quality control procedures required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing virology diagnostic or clinical testing preferred but not required.

Posted Salary $49,290/yr minimum
