    Your part in The Wesley Hospital team
    As the Virtual Hospitals Medical Lead, you will work closely with the General Manager Lead and Chief Medical Officer at The Wesley Hospital.
    The purpose of the Virtual Hospital Medical Lead is to provide strong clinical governance, patient advocacy and engagement with hospital and the community, through multiple domains of responsibility including, but not limited to: clinical care; patient selection; multidisciplinary team work; communication and engagement; identifying and admitting patients; education; service innovation and development; and advocacy for patients and the service. The scope of clinical practice within the Virtual Hospital includes but is not limited to the Hospital in the Home (HITH) service.
    The role is based at The Wesley Hospital but will provide medical governance and service leadership for patients admitted to the VH from all four hospitals. The VH Medical Lead will work closely with other Virtual Hospital staff, Hospital Visiting Medical Practitioners, Hospital Nursing and Allied Health staff, BlueCare Leadership, BlueCare Nursing and other staff within the UnitingCare Health Hospital group.

Some Key Accountabilities (plus others included in Position Description)

  • Provide clinical leadership in the management of patients who are admitted into the VH
  • Review and assess VH admission suitability from a variety of admission sources (hospital, emergency or consulting rooms) to determine if hospital care can be safely provided in the patient’s residential environment and provide timely communication of the outcome to other health practitioners, stakeholders, the patient and family.
  • Supervise and delegate appropriate assessment of the patient to nursing and other members of the VH team
  • Provide clinical governance to VH patients, including their safe and timely transfer to and from other providers
  • Establish processes for escalation of care over the 24-hour continuum
  • Support the multidisciplinary team
  • Establish the new Virtual Hospital Medical Lead role with existing and potential referrers including (but not limited to) VMP’s & the Emergency Departments.
  • Support and manage a program of quality measurement in VH services.
  • Establish links with public and other Virtual Hospital services around Australia to share experiences and gain insight into operational processes
  • Achieve results through personal proficiency and demonstrate high-quality technical or professional work.

What makes a difference for us?

Essential:

  • Registered medical practitioner in Queensland
  • FRACP or equivalent
  • Experience working as a Consultant Physician for 5+ years is desirable.
  • Significant experience working in large/complex Hospital settings or a HITH service would also be highly regarded
  • Access to a CMBS provider number.
  • Accredited or eligible for accreditation at UCH hospitals.
  • Classification A driver’s licence is desirable but not essential.
  • Significant and broad clinical experience is a requirement given the need to support care of acute unexpected deterioration in an isolated setting.
  • A recent working experience in acute hospital medicine
  • Capacity to balance clinical and leadership responsibilities as well as a commitment to team work
  • Be flexible and willing to learn and incorporate feedback into clinical practice and leadership
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to represent and promote the VH service to external stakeholders
  • Be patient focused, and be able to effectively communicate with potential and admitted VH patients
  • Be willing to commit to the mission of delivering high quality acute care to patients at home

Desirable:

  • Basic life support (BLS)
