ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

The City of New Westminster’s Art Services department is looking for vibrant and experienced visual art instructors to join our department to develop and provide instruction for children and/or youth programs in our purpose-built art studios at Anvil Centre.
Candidates require a background in both visual arts and instruction, with expertise in techniques, materials and traditional practices in either drawing, painting, printmaking, illustration, mixed media and/or sculpture. The ability and interest to instruct a variety of media is considered a strong asset along with some weekend availability. Program themes are conceptualized in collaboration with the Arts Program Coordinator however instructors are encouraged to think boldly and creatively about course curriculum development. Applicants should be familiar with course curriculum that builds skills throughout a series of classes. Applicants with current artistic practices (practicing and/or exhibiting) are encouraged to apply.
Candidates will have experience teaching youth and/or children programming, and will be available and interested in leading Spring Break and Summer Camp programming (full-day or half-day).
Successful applicants will also have opportunities to connect with other service departments within the City. This could take the form of delivering community engagement projects, workshops, special event activities, installations or exhibition projects which connect, inform and connect the New Westminster community.

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • Educational background in visual arts either through completion of accredited programs or continued professional development.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of contemporary art education and sound previous instructing experience within a recreational and/or cultural studio setting.
  • Ability to create and provide supply lists and develop curriculum.
  • Positive and approachable demeanor.
  • Excellent time management and responsiveness.
  • Excellent classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector (PIC-VS) check.
