Description:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a two-year community college program or equivalent in a related area. Minimum of 1 year and up to, but not exceeding, 2 years of relevant experience in the field.
Preferred: Experience working with volunteers and immigrants as well as interacting with the general public and governmental agencies. Must be available for some evening and weekend hours.

  • Awareness of adult literacy issues and refugee and immigrant experiences
  • Ability to develop and maintain a close liaison with the community
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and judgment.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with internal and external contacts
  • Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team with an aptitude for working in a collegial and collaborative environment
  • Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to stay organized and prioritize tasks
  • Competence and proficiency in the use of computer systems and software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook) and internet
  • Experience with social media platforms

Responsibilities:

  1. Recruits and screens potential ESL-SAP tutors by:
  • advertising in appropriate newspapers;
  • speaking at public information meetings and service clubs;
  • responding to telephone inquiries;
  • interviewing potential tutors and making recommendations to the Instructor.
  1. Supports the Instructor to establish logistical details related to initial training sessions and on-going workshops by:
  • making room reservations;
  • advising the participants of the date, time and place of the program;
  • ensuring the appropriate equipment is available.
  1. Responds to initial telephone inquiries from potential learners and tutors.
  2. Assists the Instructor with intake procedures, including completion of settlement plans in reporting database and providing local service information. This position is specifically excluded from making any interpretation relating to the inventory.
  3. Assists the Instructor with matching learners and tutors.
  4. Monitors learner/tutor pairs and refers learning problems to the Instructor.
  5. Maintains a collection of learning resources for the tutors and learners.
  6. Sets-up and maintains records relating to the program including budget information and expenditures and manages expense claims.
  7. Keeps a record and reports training time, tutoring time, and co-ordination time.
  8. Promotes the program in the community.
  9. Arranges and facilitates at least monthly field trips, guest speakers or other events for learners
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.
