If you answered yes, our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) site located near Pinawa, Manitoba is looking for a Waste Characterization Specialist (WCS). WL is required to certify the composition of all its waste and how it will dispositioned through re-use, recycling, storage or disposal. Responsibilities:
· Developing new waste characterization initiatives, providing oversight to established techniques/operations and continually seeking alternatives to improve the way Waste Services plans and executes waste characterization while meeting customer criteria and company/regulatory requirements.
· Staying informed of the latest technological and scientific developments in the field and making recommendations related to the improvement of Waste Characterization Processes to ensure CNL offers an effective and efficient service.
· Working effectively with decommissioning teams and various other organizations, including Environmental Protection, Radiation Protection, Health Physics, General Services, Procurement and Facility Operations.
· Assisting projects with scheduling and coordinating resources.
· Providing technical guidance to the team of Technical and Professional staff on characterization methods and processes, efficiencies, new methodologies, fingerprint application, and general knowledge development.
· Investigating unexpected results and interpreting the complex data using past experience and comparative situations.
· Making recommendations and providing guidance that are technically accurate and feasible.
· Authoring, revising and reviewing characterization/operational documents, (e.g., Data Quality Objectives, Waste Characterization Plans, Characterization Work Plans, Operating Procedures, Project Documentation and Training Plans).
· Reviewing the work of others for technical accuracy and adequacy.
· Supporting field walk downs of assigned job scopes and coordinating and monitoring field activities related to Sample Plan development and the management of samples through chain of custody.
· Analyzing data and using specialized software while presenting concise and accurate information to waste generators about the characteristics and management options of their waste.
· Interfacing with a wide range of support service groups including, but not limited to; Industrial Hygiene, Radiation Protection, Trades staff, Waste Management Operations staff, and Waste Program Staff.
· Innovating while adhering to safety, regulatory and client requirements and demands.
· Assessing new project scope and defining the strategic approach to characterizing the waste stream to the appropriate level.
· Developing sound Waste Characterization and Sampling plans, understanding the limitations of those plans and providing oversight and guidance during execution to ensure quality samples are collected forming the basis of sound analysis.
· Interpreting data from testing and analysis (i.e. gamma spectroscopy), and various laboratory capabilities for analysis of various radionuclides and non-radioactive elements in a multitude of samples (liquid, soil, concrete, etc.) and using this information for making decisions and recommendations for to waste processing.
· Working under pressure and managing conflicting priorities.
· Communicating well orally and in writing. Writing excellent technical reports, with an ability to organize and present ideas, requirements and processes in a logical and succinct manner.
· Delivering presentations and/or training to other staff, including technologists, professionals and managers.
· Maintaining confidentiality in all matters.
· Other duties as assigned by manager.
