CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY - UNION

Join our Water Quality and Customer Care branch as a Wastewater Source Control Technician. This position works with sewer utility customers, monitoring and controlling activities, to protect the wastewater treatment processes at the City’s treatment facilities from harmful discharges into the sanitary sewer system. This encompasses the protection of sewer infrastructure, sewer workers, biosolids quality and drinking water sources.
This is a term position with an end date of December 5, 2025.

Responsibilities:

DUTIES - UNION

  • Monitors and investigates activities of commercial, industrial and institutional sanitary sewer system users; investigates client billing records and the condition of on-site plumbing connections to sewer system; identifies recommends improvements necessary to reduce discharge and meet established City Bylaw standards.
  • Collects, tests, prepares and analyzes samples from the sanitary sewer collection system.
  • Evaluates test data and determines sewer loading that may exceed standard regulations.
  • Responds to enquiries and complaints from clients and the general public; explains regulations and standards to clients; recommends available alternatives; deals with non-compliant dischargers using effective persuasion and conflict-resolution techniques.
  • Plans and prepares a comprehensive customer education program, using advertisements and promotions through various media, to increase awareness, reduce customers use and support compliance with sewage discharge standards.
  • Operates, inspects, maintains, monitors and repairs or replaces testing and field equipment.
  • Reviews applications and issues wastewater discharge permits.
  • Provides guidance, instruction and direction to utility workers and equipment operators, on a project basis.
  • Prepares cost estimates and recommends purchase and replacement of services and equipment.
  • Calculates user charges and prepares invoices.
