Job Description:
SGM is seeking an entry-level part-time Water Resources Technician, to reside in the Durango, CO office. This Water Resources Technician will provide technical science and data support on a wide variety of water resource projects and maintain strong working relationships with other SGM disciplines to foster timely execution of other environment, civil, drinking water, and wastewater projects as needed. Work could include:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- 0-3 years of experience in water resource and/or natural resource consulting including groundwater, surface water hydrology, water rights, and water quality services
- Interest in and desire to learn Colorado water rights and water resource management, including local, state, and federal drinking water, wastewater, ground and surface water rules and regulations
- Proficient in using ArcGIS Desktop and/or ArcGIS Pro software.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Well-versed in Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite, including tracking, sorting, filtering, and manipulating complex datasets; using high level formulas to concisely summarize data (VLOOKUP, SUMIF, etc.); creating user-friendly tables and charts to visually display complex data
- Strong technical writing skills
- The successful candidate will either have, or be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering, hydrology, geology, water resources or other related science discipline
- Valid driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Exposure to permitting and Clean Water Act compliance is preferred but not essential
- Understanding of environmental science and sampling, geology, hydrology, and chemistry is preferred but not essential
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to travel to various project sites, including mountain locations.

Responsibilities:
- Support the technical needs and execution of projects associated with SGM’s water resource services including water supply planning and development, groundwater, surface water and water quality needs
- Collecting, processing, and interpreting various types of water resources and water rights data in the field
- Manage, process, and analyze geospatial data to support projects
- Complete project mapping using ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Desktop software
- Support project teams with GPS and field maps
- Communicate effectively with SGM teams and clients
- Prepare figures, tables, and project memos and reports
- Work may also include completing data collection tasks, regulatory permitting support, water rights analysis, project assets management, and grant applications support.
