Job Description
AECOM’s Ottawa office is looking for a motivated and skilled Water Resources/Hydrotechnical Engineer with relevant experience related to open channel hydraulics and hydraulic modeling.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical and program support on a variety of water resources projects, including dam safety reviews, floodplain mapping, inundation analysis and drainage systems. Cross discipline support may also be required for drainage-based municipal and transportation projects. This position supports a variety of project work within AECOM and requires a professional with the demonstrated ability to work well with others as a member of a team as well as willingness to mentor and help train junior staff.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Leading or supporting hydrologic and/or hydraulic disciplines which are part of AECOM’s projects;
- Leading or supporting the hydrotechnical component of dam safety reviews (water retention dams) on river systems;
- Preparing or directing hydrotechnical designs related to water management for flood routing;
- Designing hydraulic structures including detailed drawings for construction of ponds, spillways, ditches, weirs, basins, and culverts;
- Performing dam breach analyses (water retention on river systems);
- Collecting data from multiple sources to support project development, such as Lidar and photogrammetry, historical precipitation, temperature and discharge records, annual extremes, IDF datasets, climate normals, and engineering schematics;
- Completing statistical analysis for extreme events;
- Delivering complex scopes of work involving technical designs and reviews, in collaboration with other technical leads responsible for structural, geotechnical and environmental components;
- Proposes methodologies to solve new problems, using modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments;
- Identifies discrepancies in results and is able to carry out quality assurance tasks.
- Provides guidance to entry level or intermediate engineers;
- Performs work in accordance with agreed budgets and schedules with little supervision;
- Independently performs all the tasks necessary to complete primary design elements for engineering works;
- Performance at this level requires developmental experience in a professional position.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Water Resources or Civil Engineering or related field
- 6+ years of water resources engineering experience with a focus in hydrology and hydraulics;
- Work experience related to hydrotechnical model development for open channel hydraulics with HEC-RAS (1D, 2D and hybrid);
- Ability to work proficiently with GIS software (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS);
- Firm understanding of georeferencing basics and ability to carry out horizontal and vertical system conversions;
- Proficiency in RAS Mapper tools to develop models and analyze results;
- Ability to develop and run a basic georeferenced HEC-RAS model using raw data with minimal to no guidance in 1D and 2D;
- P.Eng. from any province within Canada with the ability to obtain the Ontario P.Eng. license from the PEO or EIT registered with the PEO, with the ability to become registered within six months of employment start;
- Software platforms of interest include HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HEC-SSP, ArcMap, ArcGis Pro, QGIS.
- Proficient knowledge and experience using MS Excel and other office packages.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Water Resources or related discipline;
- 15+ years of water resources engineering experience with a focus on hydrology and hydraulics;
- Dam Safety Review, and Water Resources engineering design and construction experience are considered a strong asset;
- Specific water management expertise focused on dam safety classifications and flood routing assessments;
- Experience in hydrology and flood modelling related software such as PC-SWMM/EPA, SWMM, VISUAL OTTHYMO, and InfoWorks will be considered an asset;
- Ability to work independently and as a team member who is willing to motivate and lead by example;
- Strong oral communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills;
- Excellent written skills needed to support the development of technical reports, documents and training materials.
This position is based out of the AECOM Ottawa office, however remote working opportunities from elsewhere in Canada will be considered.
