Description:
THE OPPORTUNITY:
The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting a Water Treatment Plant Operator to fill a permanent full-time position. Water Treatment Plant Operators are responsible for the emergency and day to day operation and control of the City’s Level IV Water Treatment Plant and Level IV Distribution System. Key accountabilities are to perform work functions that ensure compliance to established policies and procedures, OH&S, and the AEP Approval to Operate. The Water Treatment Plant operators provide for the safe and efficient operation of plant equipment and treatment processes, and for the reliable production and supply of high-quality water for all residential, commercial, industrial and regional customers.
AS OUR PREFERRED CANDIDATE, YOU WILL HAVE:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Unrestricted Water Treatment Level 2 Alberta Environment Operator’s Certification or Equivalent
- Education or training in a one (1) year water/ wastewater related technical program is preferred
- Power Engineering 4th Class will be considered as an asset
- Must successfully pass all safety certificate courses currently required and others to be defined by the Province or by the City
- To Maintain Certification, they are required to achieve 3.6 CEUs every 3 years.
- Minimum 4 years in operating processes of municipal infrastructure in a Level III or IV Provincially Certified Water Treatment Operation or Equivalent
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
- Ability to work unsupervised and co-operate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instructions and to provide guidance and instructions to junior operators or Waterworks Labourer’s.
- Well-developed verbal, computer and written communications skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- Strong computer aptitude including demonstrated proficiency with City based computer programs, databases, spreadsheets and word-processing software.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to accurately use a wide range of testing equipment.
- Current knowledge on regulations, procedural updates and water quality issues.
- Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and co-operate with colleagues as a team, to understand and follow instructions. Be able to read and understand blueprints, drawings, schematics and maps.
- Understand and apply applicable Alberta Environment Approval to Operate.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, property and business owners/officers, and their representatives.
- Must be physically fit in order to climb, open and close valves, lift, bend and twist in awkward positions, moderate physical exertion regularly in awkward positions.
- Ability to work inside and outside in all types of weather and in conditions which may be noisy, dirty, wet, cold, hot and disagreeable.
- Demonstrated safety skills in the use of specialized equipment including respirators and air quality monitors. Work may require use of harnesses and hoisting equipment.
- This position has a wide range of functional responsibilities and skill requirements, from operating pumps to dealing with dangerous chemicals and is required to be proficient with a variety of tools and equipment.
